I’m almost done dismantling the rotten 59 cab I have. I’m down to these last two switches – wiper and heater controls. The wiper switch doesn’t have a **** on it anymore and I can’t seem to figure out how to get it off without cutting open the dash and I’d rather avoid that conclusion. The heater switch has the **** on it and I can seem to get the pin but I’m not sure how to turn it. If anybody’s got a clue on that one. Had anybody got any tricks for taking these off so I don’t destroy anything in the process? Thank you for helping save these for the new cab I just picked up.
For the wipers you heed a small piece of 1/2 inch steel tubing or close to it with some nubs that can catch the little notches on the nut on the inside of the switch body. Clear as mud right? For the heater, I believe the **** and shaft are one piece with the core that goes through the control cable. You might have to get behind the dash and spray some penetrating stuff on it as the whole thing is supposed to pull out in one piece and then you can turn the inner nut out as you need to do on the wipers. If you can't get the cable to move, you can always cut the white plastic portion off carefully and then remove the retaining nut. They sell replacement ***** that are held on with set screws for this situation.

I’ve been trying to turn the nut with a small screwdriver, but it seems to get hung up. I’ll do some digging for some steel tube to make the tool.

Ok, this is what I was looking for. So the cable housing should pass through the switch and out toward the seat? Just making sure I understand.
I had read the replacement ***** were not very good match to the stock pieces. It was an older post with, believe, Number Dummy. I’m missing the choke, wiper and radio *****. Are there better ones now?
I can make that, thanks for the pic. Does it matter that my wiper switch has four “slots”? I can get about 5 deg of rotation and then it stops- using a small screwdriver. Maybe if I have the tool it’ll even out the torque on the threads…
Thanks for pointing me to the tool, it gave the confidence to keep trying to turn the retaining nut. That and a shot of PB blaster. I was worried it would strip or break. I’m guessing it had a piece of grit in there and I just needed more oomph.
This one, however, has me scratching my head. It sure seems like the **** needs to come off so the switch can come out the back.
I don’t see anyway to remove the cable housing/holder. Truth be told, I am currently in need of the ****. not the switch- The new cab is missing the wiper ****. That being said, I’d like to save as much for future use.
In the picture this looks like a flathead set screw, but really it’s just a half of the slotted. I tried finagling a flathead screwdriver in there, but I damaged the **** instead. If I can’t get it off, I’ll cut the shaft and find a way to get the set screw off out some how…
So I decided the best course of action in saving the know was to cut shaft and see if I can get the **** off somehow on the bench.
If im successful I’ll have a good serviceable **** for my wiper switch in the new cab. I’ll report back after I take it to work and get some other thoughts on how to get it out.
Just a recap from my previous post: unable to remove the set screw to get the **** off I used the cut off wheel to remove the **** with the shaft intact. This allowed me to have better working conditions- to put it in the vice and hold it steady.
The real problem here is while that may look like a flathead screw, in actuality, it is a half circle screw head. I was unable to turn the screw to release the **** from the shaft. I showed it to a few of the guys at work and a couple of ideas were thrown out. The first one was to heat it up, but I fear that would damage the ****. The next one was to use a Dremel to start a hole in the screw so I could then use a left-handed drill bit to get it out, after several different attempts with several different bits, I gave up on the Dremel idea. As I looked down at the **** in the vise, I remembered the small chisels. Grabbing one and a hammer, I gently tapped the screw in a circular motion. Success!!
I had assumed the **** would have a D shaped hole to match the shaft. It’s in fact round. The reason it’s significant- I can orient the **** with the set screw at the bottom to hide the marring from removing the screw.
So why is it not a complete success? I had to cut the shaft. Ideally, the screw would have been a useable head to loosen it. I intend to fix the shaft and repurpose the switch for another function in the future. That should be an easy weld and grind process.
For anyone looking to remove one of these ***** in the future:
It’s not a flathead screw. Trying to use a screwdriver only marred mine up.
Cutting it off may seem extreme, but I don’t think I could have gotten it off in the dash. I firmly believe the shaft can easily be repaired.
Be gentle with the chisel and hammer. My plastic was soft and brittle.
