i've noticed somthing with my truck the thing was running rough but was good on fuel 16 street and 22 highway was thinking about changing the engine but it started running great now stalls occasonaly but not all the time now and its drinking gas like it was soda pop there are no fuel leaks and i changed the fuel filter it has a manual chokeand i was running 93oct but switched to 89oct and thats when it started running better
timing gears no belt or chain and my uncl checked it and its fine he says and after driving at a slow speed for a few minutes but gas milage sucks now about 6 street and 11 highway
i don't know what my igniton timing is never checked it but the carb is a reman tommy carb that has alot of problems that i stuck a automatic to manual choke conversion kit on it to fix most of the problems by maualy controlling the air coming into the carb and zero black smoke
O.K., let's start from the beginning. Pull your plugs and lay the out like they came out(try to keep the wires in order) What do the plugs look like....color, gap, buildup? 84...electronic ignition? How long has it been since it had a tune up? Do tou have acces to a timing light?
heres what know right know its been a year since a tune up lat time i tuned it up the spark plus were discoloered around the the spark end it was orange but gap was good and i plan to tune it up on my next day off and no i don't have access to a timing light and i will check it on my day off whitch will be this wedsday so i will update then and i have a dera spark 2 system
the computer is good i just tested it it told me the intake manafold has a leak but i haven't found it yet. but i replaced the cap and rotor and it ran better just went on a 32 mile trip and only used 3 gallans of fuel. i will try to replace the spark pluges tomarrow. got to change the plugs with the engine cold or ill strip the block
dose a f-150 from 1984 need emession control system becauce my truck passed w/out it all i had was the cat on the exaust but the rest was not hooked up
cant remember but i think it was 9 1 2 my father barrowed the code reader and the book that came with it to test his 86 ford thunderbird. i chamged the spark plugs on my ford and found that there is alot of suit but the insulater and posts were clean but and in great condition i changed them any way to bosh platnims
All that soot on the plugs indicates a rich condition which is believable due to you milage. If you had an intake leak, it should be running lean. I don't actually have a book that covers that year so I have to rely on memory. Being an 84 it should be an EEC3 system? I don't think they used 3 digit codes then either so, I would take another look at the codes. Can you drive it to Autozone and have them check the codes? It's sounding like you have a bad MAP sensor, but that's just a wild guess by looking at your symptoms.
