Cliffnotes: have 2 working fobs with no working keys.
So on my 2017, either at auction or at a shop, someone pulled the key out and swapped it with another key.
I had a mobile locksmith tell me they can cut a key for it.
The reason for my post is because I don’t want to take off work and them show up to only tell me no. I have a spare key fob programmed with a blank in it and will cut that and another regular key backup.
Or should I go to the dealer? The dealer actually reprogrammed the key fob but didn’t cut the key, apparently they knew it was wrong. Figured this stuff out as I was trying to lock some stuff several months later.
The labor base is horrible around here with a large influx of people. So you have to monitor every and figure it out unless you have unlimited time.
Any "compatible" fob can be programed to your truck. The FCC ID needs to match. The key blank is cut to your VIN coding. Most FORD service departments charge $10 to cut your key blank. 🔑 If the locks have been changed, then the locksmith is the better bet. FORD would probably sublet to a locksmith anyway.
I bought two key fobs with key blanks and a lifetime FORSCAN membership for less than half what FORD wanted for for one key fob. Service cut my blanks for $20 total, complaining about how hard the key blanks were to cut. I bought an OBDII interface for another $45. It's proven itself to be very handy.

I did the same thing within weeks of taking delivery 6 years ago. The 2 fobs/key blanks were about $30-$40, I programed the fobs and locksmith cut key blanks for a couple dollars each.
This is the cheapest insurance you can get. Ford rapes you on the key/fob and programing (about $350 last I heard). Most people find out when they lose or damage a key. You need 2 fobs to program another. When you are down to on fob its to late.

I got my spare key fob from an online retailer not ford.
So I guess my question is they can cut a key from having the VIN? Because the truck only came with a push button start fob not a key. There is no key to lock my glovebox for example.
I bought another key fob and programmed it (little tricky) because you need two active key fobs to program one. If you only have one fob you have to have ford do it. This is corect right?
