Radiator Sizes?

Does anyone know the differences between radiators in the 6 cylinder vs v8 variants? I thought mine was a factory v8 but it appears to have the smaller radiator. This was an issue when installing the vintage air kit.

To add to my post; the vintage air instructions indicate that the radiator opening should be 27 5/8" wide. Mine was around 23 if I remember correctly, and therefore needed to be cut wider to fit the AC condenser. I made the cut but then that leaves the radiator hanging from the passenger side bolts only. I bent some stand off brackets with some aluminum that I had laying around, but for the price of the vintage air kit you would think there would be a nice bracket for this or a different condenser that fits the radiator better. Oddly enough, it looks like the AC condenser COULD fit within the recess of the radiator, if it was shifted towards the passenger side a few inches. Currently I have a temporary solution in place but ideally I want to upgrade to a larger radiator that fits the opening better. I'm trying to understand which trucks had which radiators so I can order a replacement with a little more reassurance that it will fit correctly.

Hope you saved the piece to weld back in. Read the ND post, there is no difference in the width of the opening only the SC/R had a taller opening.

You think Vintage air sent you the wrong condenser?

Hmm, odd, the Vintage Air instructions specifically talk about cutting out the extra width. Let me see if I can find it...

I suppose it's possible that my truck originally had a 6 cylinder, but seems unlikely to me based on what I was told regarding the history of the truck. Is it possible that the maybe the 6 cylinder and "small" V8 (302) shared the same radiator and the larger displacement V8's were standard with the wider radiator? Based on your link the super cooling radiator was only taller, width would have been the same.

FWIW, I installed a NEW aluminum radiator when I rebuilt my V8. Bolted right in if I remember correctly. Been a couple of years ago so...?

What is the letter in the 4th position of the VIN after the FXX?
That is what the original engine was: A=240, B=300, G=302, H=390, Y=360.

As stated by ND, there is no such thing as a Six or V-8 core support. It is only regular/Xtra cooling/AC vs Super Cooling. That shows you what a bunch of DA's they are at Vintage Air.
It seems that the crew at Vintage Air have never read a Ford Master Parts Catalog. They just ASSUME that copying one Ford fits every Ford made. Must just be a bunch of stupid Chimmy people over there.

This is what I've seen as far as how Ford mounted the narrower radiators used for the I6's. img_6747_04d3757a769736a6ec363404608db5c09185512e. jpg (720×480) (ibsrv.net)

Rich,

Thanks for this info; 4th letter is G, so sure enough it is a V8 302. And yeah it sounds like VA must have designed the system off a 4wd with super cooling.

The thing is the brackets I made should work, however for the amount of money you pay for a VA kit you would think this would have been vetted out already and they would have included a bracket or something. The part that frustrates me is they show you how to modify the core support, but they don't include a way to mount the radiator on the driver side after cutting. Oh well, everything else seems to be straight forward on the install so I guess if the biggest modification I had to make was two brackets that took 10 mins, I can't complain.

Interesting, that almost makes me think those narrow radiators still mounted to the same spot on the radiator core support as the super cooling radiators. Which makes me wonder why mine had two sets of mounting holes at different widths. Here's a picture from before I cut the support.
