I chased a vacuum leak in my newly built 351m for a decent while. The brake booster was bad so new booster and master helped a ton. I did a smoke test to make sure the intake was good and no additional hidden leaks. The fairly new AVS2 650 was suspect as I could close the idle mixture screws all the way in and the rpm would actually raise. Well during the smoke test I watched a decent amount of smoke come out of the manual choke linkage rod. I believe I have found my problem. Now - ?? What do I do? I don't see any other posts here with this problem in the past - which is surprising. Anyone have this issue? I love these carbs and have had many. They are not exactly cheap. I would like to salvage this one if possible. Thanks
The avs2 is a nice carb. I have a 1916. My suggestion is to call Edelbrock. It’s a newer carb so they should be able to help. And chances are you’ll get solid info right from the source.
You probably don’t see other posts about it because not that many people end up trying the smoke test in the first place.
Where exactly are you seeing smoke come out of choke linkage?
Seems to me that with a manual choke, the only linkage is the cross shaft for the butterfly, and the high idle cam.
Neither one of which would pose a vacuum leak.
Got a pic of the offending area? With circles and arrows, and a paragraph on the back of each one describing what it is?
A little 55 year old thanksgiving humor…🙄
I bought a new AVS2 about a year ago because everyone seemed to be raving about them at the time, I opted for a manual choke as the truck already was set up for one. I could never get it to start well, the fuel evaporates out of them over a few days so that makes it worse. AND I also had an issue with the mixture screws, my passenger side mixture screw could be turned all the way in with no effect. Rather than digging into it I just cleaned up and set up a Holley street warrior I had and stuck it on and it solved the issues.
If you have a vacuum leak your mixture screws should need to be turned OUT more to get increase the idle quality, not the opposite. Also I think edelbrock is a little more helpful as far as customer service so they can probably help you figure it out or repair it since it's newish.
