Intro thread

Hello from Puyallup Wa.

A little about me. I have a good running old 95 f250 W a 460. No issues there.
I've been out for going on 15 years, but in my younger days I was a 63S/Heavy Wheel Vehiclemechanic in the Army and im very comfortable with electrical troubleshooting.

I joined the forum today in hopes of helping get my buddys 2004 f250 6.0 back on the road.
So my old pal, who has 0 mechanical ability, just bought this pickup and a used camper to start camping with his young family..
Well, within 10 days the pickup was stolen from in front of his home in Renton and wasnt recovered for about 3 weeks, when it turned up near some homeless squats in Tacoma.
He tried to drive it away from the impound yard, but quickly found that it would not make power and once warm, it wont stay running if you attempt to throttle up.
We had it towed to my place, and ive just started trying to figure it out. If it's completely cold I can get it rolling enough to move it around in the driveway, but once it's got some heat in it, you can't develope enough power to move.
I've got a pretty decent code reader and a complete set of tools, but I could really use some guidance to help get me started. Any basic steps that you experienced guys would start with would be a big help!
Thanks
Mieco (Will) H.

Howdy! Welcome to FTE. I'm pretty new here as well but I'd definitely recommend downloading forscan on either your phone or laptop. It's free on pc and 5 bucks on a phone. I use that with a Bluetooth OBDII reader (though you can used a wired USB one, whatever works) and I can read all kinds of information about these trucks. Not sure about how much you know about what makes these trucks tick but knowing the ICP and IPR values can be crucial to diagnosis. If you're looking for a place to start I would shoot us a post of data points such as ICP, IPR, FICM voltage, EBP, MGP, MAP, Baro, IAT1, IAT2, VSS and RPM. Knowing all of those when the truck is KOEO, running cold, and driving at operating temperature could be helpful in diagnosing issues. Sounds like you can't get the driving and operating temperature but perhaps if you can get some data of when it fails that could help. There are some wicked smart people on this forum that know these trucks like the back of their hand. I've only had one 6.0 for about 7 months. And you've probably already checked this but do you have an codes to go off of?

Thanks for the welcome Steve!

I appreciate the info, thanks Steve!
I'll download the app and get smart on how to use it. Also, my code reader is a Innova 5610, which has some pretty good options and can connect to the net or Bluetooth.
from what I've read, there are a handful of components that can give you fits on these things, so I'm sure I've got my work cut out for me.
I just pulled the batteries off the charger, dropped them in and moved the truck aside in the driveway in preparation for turkey day visitors. That was all she could muster.
I'm going to turn the tv on now and hope my Seahawks dont get their tails kicked today, but ill be back at it later this week.

Thanks again for the help!
Will
