I've been trying to find what coolant I need to use in my truck. I'm not sure when it was last changed, or what it was changed with. I've read that there are green coolants that needs SCA's, or Extended Life Coolant that can be used in only certain trucks. This information is all pretty old. What is the best coolant I can get for my engine nowadays? I'm not sure of the date code on the engine.
I have an 03 but an older forged rod block that's been rebuilt. I run extended life coolant. I used to use chevron but now just get it from my kenworth dealer.
I'm sure others will be in to tell you what they use. i also think there's a recent thread about this somewhere around here
L99-03 7.3s can use ELC. It was the E99 7.3s that had an issue with it. This is a very detailed break down of which engines can and can’t use it and the best way to flush them as well.
Doesn't play nicely with injector cup material Ford used prior to switching. Thread linked above has some great info to feel confident on making an informed decision.
CAT ELC here too for 400,000 miles, no issues. Had gold from the factory for the first 100,000 and slight cavitation arose on front cover. The CAT ELC stopped it in it’s tracks. Looks exactly the same at 500,000 miles, as it did when I converted.
Put me in the gold coolant fan club. It's cheaper than ELC, and totes better than green on SLCs.
Coolant is a consumable product like brake pads, never intended to last forever. Way more likely to be dumped for a water pump change or some other leak way before it ages out.
Cheaper? I get my ELC for $8-10/ gal...I just like the red, fit's my color scheme. I think it's just a matter of time before green is basically obsolete and yellow/ gold replaces it.
