I am refurbishing a 1996 F-150 4x4 rclb with the 300 inline 6 and automatic E4OD
The transmission pan gasket was leaking so I replaced it with one that will hopefully seal better. While in there the fluid looked good. I didnt change the transmission filter..but noticed you could pop it out with a slight effort.
Looking into this now...is that loose filter a ticking time bomb if it comes out that easy?
I went ahead and ordered the filter clip kit from superior transmission and will plan on replacing it. Hopefully the old o-ring will come out easily.
The truck had major shifting issues when I bought it and I got it extremely cheap for that reason, ended up just being a ripped vehicle speed sensor cable! I think someone dropped the pan to diagnose the issue but missed the real issue.
Welcome to FTE. I’ve tried a couple of aftermarket filters, they did not fit anywhere as nice and snug as a Motorcraft filter. The MC ‘snaps’ right in and felt snug/tight in place.
I’d also have a look at the sealing surface where the seal sits and make sure someone hasn’t been in there before and scored it up.
Thats the filter I ordered! Im mad at myself for wasting ATF, but I want a good job to be done. If the pan keeps leaking I will probably get a replacement which had a flat surface.
One possible solution is a newer style flat pan and a reusable pan gasket
You will be doing this job over and over if you keep the truck
Consider getting a pan with a drain plug (mine is a real expensive Hughes)
Those old cork pan gaskets would leak at about 30k intervals telling you it was time for a trans service

A 4r100 4x4 pan would work for the OPs e4OD they came with drain plugs and also take the redesigned seal. OP, was the original seal cork and was the pan flat on the perimeter or did it have a raised edge? OP. your pan would have looked like this , but deeper yes? (the gasket pictured is an old original cork one that was replaced last year )
There was a TSB for e4od filters slipping out of the transmission while inside the pan under normal use. they modified the filter design to have "feet" that kept it firmly in the trans by pressing against the pans bottom.
Mark has brought it up before
I would drop your pan again because why would you NOT replace the trans filter lol

yep that is what it looks like. The pan bolt holes are definitely all raised slightly and its not flat. The transmission surface seems perfectly flat.
I ordered a aftermarket pan that should have the flat mating surface, hope that works! ATF isnt cheap!

does the pan have a drainbolt? if not, a 4r100 4wd pan will be cheaper (probably) and have a drain bolt. make sure you get the right size filter too, a 2wd filter is shorter than a 4wd filter.
I replaced the filter with a motorcraft one and it went in super secure, not worried at all about it now!
i also swapped the original pan with a Dorman aftermarket that has a drain bolt. I then used a flexible flat style gasket and also used some transmission gasket RTV for good measure.
So far im not seeing any leaks, fingers crossed! At least with the drain bolt I can save and reuse the fresh ATF instead of it spilling over the pan, on the dirty exterior, and into a drain pan.

you should have gotten an OEM elastomeric gasket which is insanely superior to a rubber gasket. but this should work till it leaks.

I initially used the ATP FG300 with the oem pan but it leaked. I went with a traditional gasket on the aftermarket pan since it was perfectly flat. I wasnt sure if an oem style gasket would be appropriate for that. At least thats what rockauto calls oem style.

Super happy with the truck so far
the oem style(late 96+ is an elastomeric gasket) but the oem style(early 96 and earlier) is a flat cork gasket.
