E4OD Filter

1996 F350 4x4 5.8 with e40d

so i went to autozone to grab a filter for my transmission and brought the old one with me to match it up. they listed 2 for my truck - one for a deep pan, one for a shallow pan. he brought out both to check them out.

the deep pan version has a longer neck that pushes up into the transmission. this matched my old filter. however, the oval pickup on the bottom of the filter that sits in the sump is like 2" tall on my old filter, but only about an inch on the replacement.

the shallow pan version had the short neck, but had the longer pickup which matched my old filter.

whats going on? do i have some kind of hybrid filter in my truck? clearly the neck length is the most critical measurement.

anyone come across this? am i ok with the shorter pickup? it still sits in the fluid, but i like the idea of a pickup being as deep in the sump as possible.

Filter type depends on if it is a 4X4 or not:

I concur with quicklook2. Take the junk back, and buy a Gen-u-ine Ford filter!

'96 F350 4x4? You need a Motorcraft FT-114, or part number # YC3Z7A098BA.

thanks for the part numbers. i'd love to buy all parts i need directly from the dealer, but if i did i'd be broke! autozone wants 18 with filter and gasket. ford wants 35 for just the filter. but in this case i may not have a choice...

i looked closer at the filter that came out of my truck and it does not appear to be original. it is made by filtran in germany and has e4od/4r100 stamped on it. so the original filter was a motorcraft piece?

save the pan gasket, fords' rubber gasket is reusable, and be carefull not to overtighten the bolts and strip something.

One other thing to check while you have the pan off. Make sure that around the edge of the pan none of the bolts have been overtightened and created a raised hole when you look at the pan from the tranny side. I had one and it had caused a leak. A couple of light taps with a hammer and it was all back in line without leaks.

You might want to check O'Reilly's. I've had good luck with them.

update**

so i went to 2 different autozones and had the same problem i initially describe with the neck/pickup length differences. well i figured i'd try a third one. this one brought out the right part. for anyone who may need it in the future, its autozone part number TF325. came with gasket for $17.99.

From the looks of it you don't have enough experience with Autozone parts yet to know to stay away from them. You'll learn soon enough. You do realize that you're protecting a $2500 transmission from failure with part that you saved $20 on, right? Makes no sense to me but it's your truck and your money.

exactly my thoughts.

a penny saved is not always a penny earned.

going to 3 different autozones just to get one right, cheap part makes no sense to me.

thanks for the input guys. i've been working on my own cars for over 15 years. my saturn has 185k on it, and my 1986 F250 that plowed snow and pulled trailers its entire life finally screamed mercy last year when the rear axle failed me. so i do have a clue about keeping vehicles on the road for a while..

but please, tell me, where should i be purchasing my parts? should i be at the dealer whenever i need a part? do you guys run the fram engine oil filters you can get at autozone, or are they junk and you go to the dealer for a geniune motorcraft filter? is everything at autozone junk, or just certain parts? please educate me. i acknowledge the guys working the counters are typically goofs, but tell me more about their parts...

ford, napa, federated and sometimes advanced are my stores.

i would get name brand oil at autozone if i really could not go anywhere else.

i never use fram filters anymore especially on fords.

I wouldn't even use a Fram filter on my lawn mower.. Yes, it DOES have a filter..

I use Wix or NAPA filters (made by Wix) on everything..

It really depends on the part. First and foremost, Fram oil filters are absolute garbage and I wouldn't use them on my lawnmower either and I don't even have one.

For electrical stuff, I order online from y2parts.com. I get Ford parts at a discount that way. I pay a few bucks for shipping but I really don't like my local Ford dealership.

I will only buy stuff like antifreeze, hose clamps, vacuum lines, bulbs, etc. from Autozone. I will buy most other stuff online or from the dealer if I can't find it or need it right away.

Even the quality at Napa isn't what it used to be. Seems like the market wants cheap parts that fail after a year or so.
