Is it normal to have a slight bearing noise come out of the air pump? The serpentine belt intermitently squeeks and it seems to be accompanied with this noise. The louder the squeek the louder the noise. I probed all around all the pullys with a vacume hose in my ear and this bearing noise is all I really come up with. Thank you.
not sure what year rig you have (you should put up a signiture with a little info to help answer questions) but older/high milage pumps do go bad and will make noises and or seize up. especially if a truck ever say for an amount of time. might try a new belt first too, and make sure tensioner is keeping a decnt tension. not sure if you can get a rebuild kit for those air pumps or not. anyone else?
An old pump will squeal or howl a bit. My 93 does it on chilly mornings or if the weather is cold and the truck has been sitting. Once it has warmed up, it shuts up....for now. I figure eventually I am going to have to replace the pump.
I normally remove all the emmissions but I figured I would leave it on this one. Does this unit draw air in and force it thru the cats? I heard tell that there are some breather holes that would love some lube spayed into them but I could not locate them.
Your '94 should draw fresh air into the pump through a filter cannister on the passenger inner fender. There is a length of flexible aluminum hose that just kind of ends. Thats the fresh air source into the smog pump. From the cannister, there is a formed rubber hose to the pump. It pushes fresh air into the cylinder heads at the ehxaust ports AND into the factory cat(s). Not familiar with any "breather holes". Older units may not use the filter cannister and may have intake holes on the pump itself. I know of no way to lube the pump. Doesn't mean there is no way to do it, just nothing I am aware of.
thank you grey. I'm not totally confident my squeek is the pump any more. I associated the noise with the squeek, but yesterday when the squeek came back and I probed it with a vac hose in my ear it wasnt coming from the pump. As a matter of fact I couldnt for the life of me locate it. Ford told me without even looking ( or listening) that it was because it wasnt a oem belt. Its a brand new napa belt. Have you heard of this?
that sounds like nonsense to me. A brand new belt is a brand new belt. Besides, a squeeling belt shoul dbe very easy to find. if your having difficulty locating it now .. seems like it may be something else. Is it rpm related t his sound? if you rev the engine does the pitch change or go away? Perhaps it may be something rattling on the exhaust sheild or something of the sort? my 94 doesnt make this noise .. but i know how annoying they can be. IF you have anymore information or updates, be sure to let us know.
I had the most annoying squeek for the longest time and incredibly random as well. it was just hard to pinpoint since i think the offending pully may have been affecting the entire drive belt from vibration. It ended up being the idler pully bearing, I replaced the entire part and it hasnt squeeked in almost a year. might be something to check, cheap to replace.
