On my 97 Explorer I keep hearing a squeeking noise coming from the front end. I don't know if it's the shocks or what. Has anyone else had this problem, and how did you stop it?
I just fixed this problem last week on my 96 Exploder.
The squeeking happened when I pushed down on the front end (like testing shocks), AND, when I turned my sterring wheel....causeing the tires to turn just a little.....it turned out to be the ball joints. Parts were 50 bucks each side (CDN).
It was the lower ball joints on the front end.....both of them. There was a way to test them as well....first you have to know where they are and what they look like.....using a jack, I lifted the front end off the ground, and used a crwbar to lift the tire up...just a little....I had someone looking at the balljoints to see if there was any "play" in them. There was plenty, which made me believe that was the culprit.....other ideas were just squeeky rubber, that sits in the axle work.

I had the same problem with a 99 mountaineer. I could put my hand on the lower ball joint while someone pushed up and down on the fender and I could feel the creaking in the joint as it was squeeking. Some mechanics will tell you that the sqeak is just caused by dried out bushings, which it often is, but if you just look for play in and feel for the creaking in the ball joint, that will usually reveal the culprit.
