I don't completely understand this. Is there some type of USB dongle that allows me to do wireless car play? I would prefer wireless.
Yes. You can do a quick search, there's plenty out there. I'm somewhat looking for one because I'm sick of having to plug my phone, but some of the cheaper ones have issues with losing connectivity, latency, audio quality and boot-up times.
I have a 22 lariat ultimate with the big screen and it has wireless CarPlay. I absolutely love it. I think I’d step up and buy a truck new enough that comes equipped with what you want. And you want SYNC 4 with the big screen. it works so well with Apple and android phones. I have read that Chevrolet wants to do away with CarPlay in 2024 but haven’t heard for sure. my wife’s new 23 Explorer limited is equipped with SYNC 3 and music works wireless through the phone, except for navigation has to be plugged in.
That link is a little wonky. I had to copy it and paste it into a new browser window. Just an aside. That little device is pretty cool. Kinda expensive, and another piece of "stuff" hanging off getting in the way. But a good solution to have wireless Car Play anyway.
By the way, I have a 2019 and the Car Play works fine. In my 2016 Edge, I had to replace the USB module to get the Car Play to work. But no issues with it now.

Actually the pics are deceiving. It's a relatively small device. I'll post a pic as soon as I can.
In 2022 Lariats and above have the 12" screen and wireless CarPlay. It is really nice to be able to leave your phone in your pocked and still have CarPlay. My wifes honda you have to plug it in, and it is a pain.
I believe that in the '17 and '18 models, Sync-3 was available on ALL levels, BUT you had to specify the larger (I think 7 or 8") screen for the head unit to have it. It was NOT wireless so you had to plug your phone in for it to work. I believe it was like that up until 2019? when some models got wireless CarPlay. If you want wireless CarPlay on a factory head unit (which I recommend staying with as some vehicle settings are only accessible through the head unit or ForScan), then you'll need something that plugs into one of the USB ports.
My 2022 XLT Premium with 8 inch SYNC 3 still has to be plugged in for CarPlay.

Thank you to all who have replied...
Looks like iConnect finally answered your question above.
I have a 2017 with Sync 3.0 and it has fully functioning Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but you have to plug into USB ....... its not wireless unless you plug in a CarPlay wireless dongle.
There is also a thread on here about upgrading your USB to include USB-C (if this is something you're interested in). All 2017-2018 had USB-A. Anyway, to do this you have to upgrade to Sync 3.4 (a simple software upgrade). Then you can switch in this part LB5Z-19A37-B (you need 3.4 "before" you switch parts).

When I had wired CarPlay I talked myself into saying it's the same thing. 100% it's WAY better to have wireless. So much more seamless, ESPECIALLY when my kiddo in the backseat constantly wants to pick out different songs on Spotify. A very first world problem/issue, but with these expensive trucks, it's still definitely worth it to have.
I want a diesel F-250. My son's advice is to look at 2017-2018 -- before COVID hit and the quality plummeted (is his belief). I had a 2000 F-250 Lariat and want to get back at least to that comfort level. The feature that I want is Apple's car play. I don't have it now so I use a rig that fits into the power outlet which is "ok" but if I'm going to spend $50K on a truck, I'd at least like to try to get the one feature I want.
The internet says that if the truck has SYNC-3, then it has Apple Car Play and Android's equivalent. Is that true? Auto trader or eBay usually does not mention SYNC-3. So, I'm trying to find a list of F-250 packages (trims) that have SYNC-3 in 2017 and/or 2018. Then I can look for those packages.
2018 and newer you can use the Ford application on your phone.
