I want a diesel F-250. My son's advice is to look at 2017-2018 -- before COVID hit and the quality plummeted (is his belief). I had a 2000 F-250 Lariat and want to get back at least to that comfort level. The feature that I want is Apple's car play. I don't have it now so I use a rig that fits into the power outlet which is "ok" but if I'm going to spend $50K on a truck, I'd at least like to try to get the one feature I want.
The internet says that if the truck has SYNC-3, then it has Apple Car Play and Android's equivalent. Is that true? Auto trader or eBay usually does not mention SYNC-3. So, I'm trying to find a list of F-250 packages (trims) that have SYNC-3 in 2017 and/or 2018. Then I can look for those packages.
SYNC 3 does have Car Play and Android Auto. My current 150 has it and I've used both. It's a nice feature to have.
You can also swap head units for one that supports it. I just swapped the wife's Jeep this past weekend to do this and I would say that was also worth the expense.
I believe that in the '17 and '18 models, Sync-3 was available on ALL levels, BUT you had to specify the larger (I think 7 or 8") screen for the head unit to have it. It was NOT wireless so you had to plug your phone in for it to work. I believe it was like that up until 2019? when some models got wireless CarPlay. If you want wireless CarPlay on a factory head unit (which I recommend staying with as some vehicle settings are only accessible through the head unit or ForScan), then you'll need something that plugs into one of the USB ports.

A couple of points, The Covid quality thing is overblown IMHO. Yes, you will find problems on forums, but the majority of owners don't post or share their experiences. You'll find plenty of problems with 2017-2018 trucks before covid hit. I would recommend a truck with the 10speed transmission. (flame suit on)...
As far as CarPlay goes, look for wireless Carplay. It's really nice to have the option of leaving your phone in your pocket and not fumbling with cords before it will work. I'm not sure when that became an option.
I believe wireless Car Play and Android Auto is a SYNC 4 feature but I'm not certain of that
Yes, Sync 4, available in 2022 MY trucks with the 12" display.
You can have Carplay in a 2016 if the USB jack is replaced with a later MY one, and upgraded to 3.4. Note, to get Carplay in any of them you must have the touch screen display.

I don't completely understand this. Is there some type of USB dongle that allows me to do wireless car play? I would prefer wireless.
We have wireless carplay in the 2023 STX. It's a big screen, not the giant screen that's across the dash. I guess it's Sync 3 or Sync 4 (likely 3). It's a good feature, super convenient. We also have this in our '21 Nissan Armada. It recognizes multiple phones and you can set priorities. Alpine, Pioneer, and Kenwood make good solid wireless units. I'd look for a new truck - find a good deal and set your own base for service and maintenance. It's just me, but I'd always be leery of a late model used diesel.
I'm not sure when I am using Apple CarPlay or not. But with mine, if I plug into the USB c port the screen changes, everything is easier to use, music from my phone sounds much better. But... my phone still works for calls, music, navigation, etc., without being plugged in. And, unfortunately, when my phone IS plugged in, folks I am talking to on the phone commonly complain they can't hear me very well.
So, given I like the way it works plugged in as far as controls, music, and speed of charging, for longer drives I am typically plugged in and reach down and unplug for phone calls. Short drives, the phone stays in my pocket. That part frustrates me, for a high trim level, expensive, relatively new vehicle. I get the music sound quality difference, but can't figure out why when plugged in others can't hear me well during phone calls.
You should definitely know if you’re using Car Play or Android Auto. The screen changes and it should be quite obvious. Maps generally comes up by default with both.

If enabled, Carplay will start as default once the Iphone connects to Sync. This may be why you don't notice a difference. For your voice issues, check the settings to make sure it is using the trucks mic for both connected and wireless in the settings, may be either on the phone or the Sync.
A quick way to test is to have it plugged in, then hold the phone up to chest level and see if it makes a difference, if so, its using the phones mic and not the truck.
