gray smoke ??

orig. 7.3 w/factory turbo
IP is about 10 years old but only 20k miles
injectors were not changed out with the IP, could be original,

up until about 3 years ago when I would step on the pedal hard I'd get good black smoke out the exhaust,

I've started to notice a change in the smoke color until now it's a gray or hardly visible cloud when I accelerate hard under load

The truck seems to run good and the only odd issue is that sometimes when going uphill at a constant speed it will seem to loose power (not rpm's) and chugg (not exactly sure how to describe the loss of power but hear a difference in the exhaust)

any ideas what to look at ??

You can confirm that all of the injectors are popping correctly by loosening the fuel line nut on top of the injectors one at a time with the truck idling. The idle should change when you loosen the fuel line nut. If the idle doesn't change you know the injector is suspect.

That's definitely in my range of abilities,

are the symptoms of gray smoke, chugging indicative of a possible bad injector or is that just the first of many rabbit holes to go down ?

I just mentioned that because you said the injectors might be OE. I thought our IDIs would spit white smoke due to air intrusion. Gray; or more likely blue, smoke can indicate worn valve guide seals on a gas engine. Especially if it's only evident when cold. Our IDIs would probably eat extra oil from worn valve guide seals as a snack.

Scott that almost sounds like a fuel starvation issue or IP issue. Is the fuel filter relatively recent?

fuel filter was checked, was clean and refilled ATF about 2k miles ago, about 14 months,
problem has been going on before then,

about 3 years ago I replaced the shower head pickups and ended up replacing both tanks because the silt was so bad in the bottom of the tanks after 10 years

I honestly don't know if the gray smoke was happening before that, I know it would chugg occasionally before that,

I know its almost impossible, but can you describe the chugg noise more, or even get a video of it while its happening?

It may be a week or two but I'll try to get a video,

the sound is all from the exhaust, it just gets a hollow, definitive, repetitive chugging,

If I keep the pedal the same I BELIEVE the rpms hold but I just start to loose power and slow down, If I step on the pedal it throws it into overdrive, the rpms increase, the chugging stops and I pick up power again,

thinking more about it, fuel starvation does seems like a possibility,
