Strange clunk
OK, this is about the same truck as in the saddle tank thread, a '76 F250 hiboy with a 390 and 4spd manual trans.
I'm pulling my hair out over this one,. Maybe someone can help.
Sometimes when starting out in 2nd, or when I'm towing a trailer and shifting between gears, the truck makes a strange shudder and a clunking sound.
It has a new clutch, installed by the previous owner.
I checked the u-joints for play, they checked out OK.
The mounts on the transfer case were pretty loose, so I tightened them up.
I pulled the cover on the rear end and checked it for any obvious play, nice and tight.
The motor is a fresh rebuild and installed very recently. The motor and trans mounts are brand new.

I had the same problem, thought it was the slip joint on the driveshaft, but ended up being the rear end. Not the rear end itself, but the yoke shaft was wobbling. I changed out the entire third member, and the problems was solved.

Could also be your pressure plate warped, scored, or loose. Recheck your motor mounts. My 390 had the same problem. Turned out to be the pressure plate.
