Appreciate the input. I always like to put things out there and get different views and takes!
I would use my mechanic. To big of a job. Can get most of it prepped.
Yes the whole job will cost quite a bit, I will recoup some of that over time with better gas mileage but drivability and fun should make up the difference.
Here’s how I look at this truck. It cost me less than my ferris zero turn mower did. I don't have a ton into it.
So if I can upgrade engine, add fun, functionality, reliability, most likely less maintenance and better gas mileage for a decent price, sounds attractive to me.
I like the "decent price" as we must have different opinions on that
It is nice to see what others like to do to their trucks.
As they say "different tricks for different kicks".
Is your truck lowered any?
Hard to tell from the avatar.
I wanted something that did not have a computer that I could fix and my 81 F100 flare side fills that hole.
Little 300 six, granny 4sp, PS / PB and AC Oh I did add Advance Adapter over drive but it did not help much for the MPG just lower RPM so less wear on the motor. When filling it up today after work 2 guys came up and said nice truck, 4 year cab off frame rebuild that I did all the work on.

I get so many compliments or thumbs up. In NY you don’t see many at all here.
Here’s a pic.
Regarding the cost and recouping it, you’re looking at it wrong. What daily commuter could you buy for $15,000 and have the same fun/cool/head-turn factor? I actually think if done right, you could get your money back. Will it be a problem to get insurance at the higher value for a classic, daily driver?
Exactly, and for me the drivability and reliability is worth a lot. You would have no issue getting big money if it’s a nice truck. For insurance I just added 15,000 value with my insurance company. I use a claimed value they figure the rate from. Have $25,000 on my truck, but truck is really probably worth $35-40k.
I would say most on the forum that under take a project like this do the work them selves but if you got the money then go for it.
I would like to know when done what the MPG improvement is and what you think the pay back will be over time?
Good luck and keep us posted with pictures!

I promise I am getting 22-25 on my setup. Lowered 2wd SWB gen1 mustang coyote with gen 3 intake manifold and airbox. Gets the best mileage of anything in my driveway. 2022 Bronco, 2015 F150, 2004 F150, 2018 Land Rover Discovery Sport.

ZAG nice looking truck. Was it from the south if from up your way it must not of seen winters (salt).
Up to 9 years ago I lived in CT so I know winters and why the wife and I moved to NC.
73 FOMO I bet it sounds sweet.
Being it is lowered helps on the MPG to keep the air from under the truck.
See all the new trucks with the air dams under the bumpers they keep air from under the truck for better MPG.
The 80-86 4x2 trucks Ford had one that you could order for better MPG , fuel mizer or something? and part of that package was a air dam that fit on the under side of the bumper.
Someone made one to see if it worked or not and it did. I dont remember how much more MPG it got but it did help.
One day I will make one for my truck but life dose not give me time to do so ATM.

For one that has done the swap, go for it, but only if you love this truck! It’s expensive but oh so worth it. Look for a gen1 f150 and 6r80 for least cost, but still expect to spend 10-15k minimum. I love it and have no regrets swapping out my 460. Super reliable, absolutely 0 problems. Crazy power and in my lowered ‘73 with 6r80 and 28” tire I get 22-25 mpg. Last road trip was 165 miles round trip at steady 70 and used exactly 6.5 gallons. I think this is primarily due to the truck weighing 2,000# lighter than a modern truck along with the 6 speed. I would drive it anywhere and do drive it a couple days a week. Here is install photos. Be glad to help with questions.

Can you tell me a little more about fuel sys upgrade?
Also what about the driveshaft? Will existing sync with newer tranny? Appreciate it!

23 gallon Boyd’s Aluminum Fuel Cell, VDO sender. The tank is built so a Stock GM ZL1 pump drops in perfectly. Big plus that you can pickup a factory pump if you ever were to need a replacement. I used a C5 corvette fuel filter regulator mounted on the frame rail close to the fuel cell…it filters and regulates and returns anything more than you need to the tank. It’s used a lot in LS swaps and works perfectly on the coyote swap. Here is a pic of the fuel cell. AN fittings and braided PTFE line to the intake manifold. I did shorten from LWB like yours to SWB. Due to the shorter wheelbase I had the 2 piece driveshaft shortened and balanced. I took all the length out of the front shaft. No issue to 7200 rpm redline. I did have to change yokes to match the flat plate output of the 6r80 and also the flat plate of the 3 link mustang 8.8 disc rear axle. I can get pics of those if needed.

100% agree on the lowering and air dam…helping with mileage. Notice my homemade air dam under bumper. I did all of this for stability. On a closed course when tuning the setup I had to do a wot pull from 15mph to redline locked in 3rd gear….which was 114mph. I wanted it planted and it is very stable at speed. I did do away with the rear bags in the above pics and using summit’s dual adjustable coilovers on the rear. QA1’s on the front with crown vic front swap.
Very sweet job. I plan on Qa1s on my 68. I am thinking of re-locating the spring mounts to lower the rear.
I still need a 5.0 cover for my engine, I average 1 brain dead a cruise night asking if it is a LS. The best one was when an idiot told me I need to wrap my engine in Chevy sheet metal!
Am I the only one to say there's more to life than fuel milage? Lmao. It would be a cool swap but like everyone else is saying there are better options. I've never been around one but ever look at doing a Holley Sniper EFI to swap out that carb? I hear they're great to maximize fuel usage and not to mention, it's Holley, it's going to be kick ***. I plan on eventually converting my 76 F150 with a Sniper EFI. My 360 FE sucks gas like crazy. The truck does 85 tops and I get 8mpg at best.
