For sure. Sounds like the Previous Owner had it long enough to do anything he wanted to it or with it.

Maybe even a second engine swap.

Guess I have a “cat in a bag” as the saying goes. The first owner, had the truck for 1000 miles after the swap prior to trading it at the same dealership that did the work. The 2nd owners, older couple, bought it from the dealership and averaged < 3k per year hauling horses to shows. They were told by the dealer it was a gen 2 and given a copy of the warranty order which they kept in the owners manual.

My guess is the 1st owner is the culprit here.

Now I have to decide what to do with it. My 7.3 has been dead reliable but at 320k I figure it’s time for it to stop dragging me and my 8000lbs of crap around the country.

The 04 seems to run great, just drove up to Toronto from Nashville and heading back on Wednesday. I have plans to head to Arizona for winter and Alaska in the spring and I just don’t like that I don’t have any clue of it’s engines history, miles or otherwise.

Decisions decisions!

Thanks so much for the knowledge transfer it’s been very informative and helpful.

Bob

There may not be any issues here, Mark and I can come up with a plethora of 'what if's'.

The real key with a 6.0L ownership is monitoring, a good scan tool, and good maintenance. Mark has a good post about what to check for before buying, but you can still go through it to see what you have. For long hauls, I would like to monitor fuel pressure, coolant pressure, and the relationship between engine coolant temperature and oil temperature. Those three items can keep you aware of any potential issues well before they become a problem on the road.

Adding on to Jack's post, if you are hauling something heavy, perhaps EGT on both banks. I also keep an eye on the electrical side of things: FICM voltages, alternator and at the OBDII adapter. Shoot, I'll just post a screenshot of my number one Torque Pro screen (and yes Mark, the oil got Hot on this run):

I ordered an SCT Livewire with egt probe last week for the monitoring. I’ll get it installed when I get home.

What do you recommend for a scan tool? I just have an iPhone and iPad.

I used to have torque pro on an android, it worked ok on my 97 but would it provide anything more than the Livewire?

Is FORScan on iOS useful?

I'm a Windows/Android guy, so I can't answer on the IOS side of things, but I think there's a version of Forscan for it. Will the Livewire monitor both exhaust banks? Reason I ask is a good friend monitored only one and sure enough lost an injector on the non-monitored side and toasted a cylinder in an otherwise perfect 140K 6.0 - he sold it for like $2k to his mechanic and it still ran...

iPhone; ForScan, which is the best, with an OBD2 Bluetooth. Either of these work, I prefer the smaller, cheaper one with my F350 as it does not pultrude into the leg area.

And why I have a T/C in both exhaust manifolds.

Here is my thread on what to look for when buying a used 6.0L.

It is also useful on what to do if you have already bought a 6.0L.

Adding another little tidbit or two.

After installing the SCT I’m seeing low FICM voltage (32-33) in the mornings. I was able to get a pic of the backside sticker since there aren’t any identifiers on the top. p/n 1845117C5 and date stamped Feb 01/08.

Also found this one in the passenger side valve cover.
