It appears to be a dash light... turn on your parking lamps and see if it lights up, and dims with the switch, or it could be the high beam indicator..
Jflem is correct that is the light that clips on the back side of the instrument cluster dash bezel. Flip it over and look for 2 piece of plastic that the curved ends of the metal tab go in. You have to squeeze that metal part (gently) to install it.
And yes it is to light up the Headlight and Windshield wiper switch legend lens. You can remove the metal end cap to get to the bulb. And or rotate the end cap and or when you install it, make sure the little hole on the end if facing the legend lens.
Thanks ya'll, I knew it clipped to something but couldn't remember where, was just kinda hanging out by the pedals when I bought the truck. I'll check near the washer/ light switch area tomorrow.
Might have been "hanging" loose because someone tried removing the plastic instrument bezel without knowing it was clipped in to a square hole in a tab, often they get broke. If was mine, I might would feel up there for jagged broke edges. You could pull the bezel loose for a look, but you'll need to pull two ***** too. The lights wires on mine are pretty long.
I knew I had some pics some where on my computer. And you only pull ONE **** off (the w/s wiper). Get a small 90* angle pick and hook the metal tab on the back side of the w/s wiper ****. With a little pressure it should slide right off. With the metal piece inside the ****.
Headlight ****..yes you can man handle it off the shaft. But really you should push down the release button on the headlight switch body and then pull the **** and shaft out as one piece. FYI your headlight are now ON. So disconnect the battery to prevent killing it.
Depending on how the headlight switch is installed, the button is ON TOP of the switch. So you have to reach up and around on top. Push the button and hold it down, pull the head light ****/shaft out. It might take a few in and out pulls to get it to release.
It is often possible to GENTLY push the stem of the headlight **** back in place (without it locking in) to turn off the lights. BTW, if you want brighter dash lights, there is a blue plastic cover on that bulb - if you remove it and all its brothers on the other dash lights, your instrument cluster will be much easier to see at night.
It looks just like the picture you posted. The one for the lighters and wipers usually has a blue cover on it. I still vote for the ash tray but I have and will be wrong again! Lol
Mine is for the wipers I think, thats where it was closest too and there isn't a light there now so. If I were to add the ash tray light assembly where can I find another socket? Can't find it on LMC.

80's Lincoln Town cars are great source, they have them in ash tray of dash and ash trays of 3 doors. They even have courtesy lamps under the front seats to illuminate the rear seat footwells. These would be great on a dentside to illuminate under the seat to find things you stashed and lost, like that spare Dura spark.
