I first did air bags. Then few years later had spring shop add two leafs to each pack. Then few years later went with custom new leaf pack. I feel like I should have done the new leaf pack at the onset.
It depends on what you're trying to do with it. If you like the way it rides but only need to stiffen it up a bit when you're loaded, you may want to consider air bags. If you're loaded all the time or aren't really worried about ride quality, I'd just go with new spring packs. Find a quality spring shop and have them build you a new set if you aren't up for the work yourself, they're usually pretty quick and can build you a custom set to whatever you want.
If you want to add a leaf find factory donor packs and install the longest leaf you can, preferably right under the main.
Aftermarket AAL's ride poorly because they're short and heavily arched. The key to good (term being relative on a SuperDuty) ride quality AND higher load capacity is lots of long (and thinner) leafs vs a handful of thicker leafs with more arch. You can't do much about the thickness of each leaf if maintaining the stock pack, but longer AAL's will require fewer additions and provide better load capacity.
Also if you don't have upper overloads, scrounge JY's and add them. This way you effectively have a "2 stage" system that only engages the upper overloads when loaded
