Ignition coil

I'm fixing to replace my distributor and everything I've read says to run the wire to the negative post on my ignition coil but my original one is wired to the positive side which should I do up until a few weeks ago the ran great

It will run either way.

Normally you want the power source hooked to the + side of the coil.

If you change the coil the most important thing is if you get an internal or external resistor coil.

Assuming everything is original you need a non-resistor coil. if someone has messed with it you might need a resistor coil.

It's been a while BUT with ignition on, grab your voltmeter and see how many volts are on the positive side of the coil wire. If it matches the battery, get a resisted coil, if it is reading something like 9 or so, there's a resistor built into your harness somewhere and you need the unresisted coil.

Correct, except some aftermarket systems require 12v to the coil.
