anyone know what a 352 bored 40 over with crankshaft turned 10 would be. I'm trying to find the year to get a rebuild kit. I don't know if all 352 kits were the same or if year matter in the 10 years of production of the 352s. I don't know if someone has tried to make this engine a 360 or 390 with it being bored. I'm more of a small block person and wanted to fix up an old 71 ford f250. I purchased this 71 f250 and the prior owner said it was a 460 and its not. I thought it was a 390 until I seen the 352 stamped on the front of the engine. any ?
All FE engines up to a point in the early '70s had "352" cast into the block. So it's possible that engine was the OEM 360 that got the .040 / .010 rebuild. If that's the case, now displaces just under 368 CID.
A 352 with a .040 overbore is just under 359 CID. (As OEM, the replacement for the 352 was the 360, with 4.050 x 3.5 dimensions, giving 360.71 CID. OEM displacement numbers are sometimes "fiddled" with so it sounds better. A 427 Ford is really a 425 for example)
So with an overbore like that and just a few cubes added, it really doesn't change anything about the engine power wise, all else being equal--352 or 360.
The crank being .010 under wouldn't affect anything other than bearing shell size.
To make a 390 requires a different crank and rods. Pistons would depend on what you're building the engine for.
If it's already .040 over you will have to have the block sonic checked to see if your bores are thick enough to take an additional .020 or whatever it takes.
Have you checked the stroke? A wire down the plug hole at TDC and BDC will give you the measurement--close enough to tell the difference between 3.50" vs. 3.79" .
What's wrong with the engine? Does it run? Compression test? Smoker?
just been sitting for several years, I figured the rings may have been stuck. I was just going to give it a fresh overhaul and paint job. after breaking it down rings wasn't stuck, cylinders and all looked good, just caked in thick oil, like someone was running cheap motor oil in it.
