Who's done them, and how did you do it?
I was under the impression you had enough space to lift the motor as it sits to gain the room needed to do the swap. I did not have that kind of success.
I removed the 4 large 21mm (L&R) nuts securing the mounts to the cross member, loosened the 2 drivers mount 13mm bolts, I removed the 2 tranny mount 21mm nuts, I was only able to raise the engine a few inches. When I let it rest back down, it did not settle into the same place, I had to raise the pass side to re-center the engine back on the cross member. For now I just put it all back together.
It looks like from what I'm reading and seeing, the CAC pipes have to come off, the spider has to come off, possibly the starter, and front drive shaft too. And maybe the the transmission cross-member should be removed and the tail supported separately?
Funny, I only found instructions in the shop manual for the 5.4, and V10 mounts. I might cross post in the 7.3 forum...
I have never seen a failed set of 7.3 motor mounts....
That said, lifting the engine enough to get the studs for those 21mm nuts out of the crossmember is all you should need. Unbolt the (3) motor mount bolts to block and you should be able to slide the mounts out of there??
No failure that I know of, I just want them replaced. The mounts are fastened to the block mounts, the block mounts are impossible to get to, but the mount to block bolts are doable. I think I'll need to remove a few things like the CAC pipes so I can get the motor high enough. This is the only video I found, which is helpful.
I can’t understand replacing a part that never fails?
Mounts are one piece. 2 bolts in crossmember and 3 bolts in block each. They look similar, but there is a left and a right.
I know, I get it, it's similar advise I give to my customers, but if they feel the need to have a functional/working part replaced, I have no issues. I've done mounts on my other vehicles in the past. I've already replaced the tranny mount on this X a few years back. This truck is 22 years old now, I'm going after what ever I can and get old stuff replaced, which at this point is not much left.
What I think I saw was the 2 bolts in each crossmember which are part of the mounts, and 4 bolts 13mm holding the top plate of the mount to what appeared to be an angled bracket which was bolted to the block. I'll dig into this after Halloween.
