Hey everyone, I've been looking around and can't seem to find a solid answer. I have a 1986 F250 with the 6.9l idi with a banks sidewinder turbo on it. I got the truck from my brother and I've bought a new Injection pump for it cause I ran 2 year old diesel through it and ruined the old one. I figured I go ahead and redo the head gaskets cause my brother said the head gaskets could be blown. I was reading and saw that when putting the push rods back in you should have the engine at TDC otherwise it could cause serious damage to the engine when it starts running. If I cranked the engine to TDC would I have to retime everything? and with the new injection pump would I have to retime it anyway? I've never timed an engine this old before and have no idea what I'm doing. I didn't take the timing cover off when pulling the heads and things. I've had the heads off for a few weeks now while waiting for the gaskets and time to put them back on. Would It be alright if I didn't spin the engine to TDC and just put everything back together? Thanks for any responses!
Moving the cylinder to TDC on the compression stroke ensures the intake and exhaust valves are both closed. Assemble the valve train at TDC so there's no load on the springs when you tighten down the rocker arms.
As long as you didn't remove the IP timing gear (2 bolts and gear housing in front of the IP) your engine should still be timed. You can only install the IP one way onto the timing gear.
where did you get the "new" injector pump from?
there are only two companies i will use, i have seen "rebuilt" pumps that are worse than the ones taken off.
they once upon a time had a very good reputation.
now they do not.
good is not cheap, and cheap is very rarely good.
R&D IDI diesel, and moose are the only two companies i would buy an injector pump or injectors from.
Good luck with the Pensacola Diesel IP. Hopefully it runs just fine. Do you have a way to set the pump timing (luminosity probe or spark adapter), or are you just going to line up the timing marks?
