I'll probably get my monitor setup to keep an eye on the Torque Converter Slippage PID......that's a much cheaper way to figure out it's not the TQ instead of loading up the parts cannon with a new one and shooting it at the truck. Ha!
I am pretty sure he knew that already .................
I don't think that any of these three gentlemen would seriously advise you to spend that kind of money unnecessarily, for no reason, especially when they all have, at a minimum, 17+ years of experience on these trucks. Mark K is the 5R110 guru. Period. He gave you the 99.9% most likely culprit on his first post. I'm pretty sure his comment about changing the converter was for your experience. We like to diagnose twice and repair once because time and parts are too expensive and precious to waste. Who's RCD? River City Diesel?
I've experienced exact same 'feeling' of converter shudder from idle to 50% throttle, it would go away at higher RPM. (I also thought the clutch packs were slipping/shuddering)
But it was a cylinder misfire! I confirm it because you still feel it in Neutral.
Of course, no CEL lights or other indication of malfunction.
I have no idea which cylinder it is, or if its an injector, wire harness or FICM.
Could be that a weak cylinder isn't compensated for as well at low rpms (or low fueling) as it is at lower or higher engine loads. Who knows.
Many people have access to a "known good" FICM for troubleshooting purposes. Same with IPR valves. The reason is because codes are not thorough enough and definitive troubleshooting techniques are not readily available to the average user. "laying around", lol.
Best of luck with the mystery.
Hi, I Am brand new to owning a diesel. What is a FCIM & IPR??Sorry to sound dumb... learning a lot about my new P.I.T.A. truck. But not brand new at having a landscape and a hardscaping company that I own. Recently the needs of the business dictated that I go from a truck that I owned up to a diesel. I now own a 2018 F-350 dually. Unfortunately because I drive a thousand miles a week I did not want to buy a brand new truck. I am now regretting that as a brand new one would have had at least enough warranty to save me a lot of headache possibly. Since I've owned the truck I have had several things done to it. In it's previous owners life it was a hot shot truck I believe. It has a onboard piped in fuel transfer tank, he had it airbagged rims tires and did a half-*** delete job on it. Once I bought the truck I fixed, repaired or upgraded several things. First order of business was a banks cold air intake, new Hot side & cold side pipes, extended cooling transmission pan, dropped all filters and fluids and had all new put in. This included a new transmission filter. Then had a Venturi reroute done because previously exhaust was pouring directly underneath cab and coming in to the point there was a day I basically had carbon monoxide poisoning. After having all this done drove the truck about 20,000 miles had the high pressure fuel pump go. Removed valve from motor & confirmed that down in the valve it looked basically like glitter. This means that metal is going into the injection chambers. So truck got all new rails fuel lines etc went with a CPX high pressure fuel pump. 2 months later hydroboost and master cylinder replaced. It has been an adventure. CPX pump split in half luckily it was warrantied it and it is being replaced. So there's the background on the truck. It has 250,000 miles on it at this point, I bought it with 228k.
The issue with it is that it constantly bellows black smoke no matter what it's doing or where or what it's pulling. Since CPX pump went in I have noticed after getting it back from the shop it has what everybody else is calling torque converter shutter. I believe it may also be something in the tune.... Any ideas out there?
