Hi guys, This weekend is the towing road trip down South.Im picking up a Honda CRV,and bringing it back on a U-Haul Car trailer(not tow dolley). Anyway since the 07 has the V-6,I was wondering about using Overdrive on the tow back.
There will not be any huge hills to "conquer".
My 07 is an XL LWB,Automatic,4.2.
I have inquired to some at work, and the consensus is pretty much split 50/50 as to use it or not.Fuel economy is not a factor, just wanna take the best care of my baby as I can.
Suggestions appreciated.
I used mine somewhat on the way to Houston texas from flagstaff arizona. When there were hills (or mountains in my case) or my engine felt like it was hunting for a gear I knocked it out of OD. I just did it by how she sounded and how she felt.
I believe that you mentioned at one point in time that you had a scanguage. If you do, keep an eye on those tranny temps and adjust accordingly.
When towing in OD with my 04 screw fx4 5.4 it will hold as long as it can but instead of downshifting it unlocks the torque converter. It doesn't down shift till it is really revving to a pretty high rpm. If you lock out OD then mine stays in 3rd and hauls a**. Course it uses a lot more gas that way. So I mix it up. Straight and level no massive head wind, OD on. Just before starting up a hill, i punch it off forcing it into third and not letting the torque converter unlock. I'm not sure but guessing that the heat build up comes from the large rpm difference on either side of the torque converter when unlocked.
When I tow, I lock out the OD. It might take slightly more gas but it is well worth it to prevent transmission damage. If you shorten the life of the transmission by using overdrive, you might not know it for years and then not know that the shorter life was caused by the towing in OD.

You don't "use" the OD, it will be on all the time unless you choose to turn ir off. The best choice is to turn it off, this will put a lot less strain on the transmision (less gear changes, less heat, less wear).
