1973 F-350 Ignition Control Module Replacement

I recently acquired a 73 F-350 XLT. It's my first ever classic Ford truck and it's in really great shape. But I need to replace the old ignition control module. I looked all over the internet and can't find anything that's made for the year. Everything that's available is for 75 and newer models. Where can I find an ICM that's specifically made for a 1973 truck? Thanks in advance!

Can you post a picture of what you have.
unless I am mistaken 73's were points system, which would mean someone has changed it.
what color is the strain relief (where the wires go in) if it is a ford ignition system.

Welcome to FTE, DuraSpark ignition modules identified by a colored plastic insert located above where the wires feed out.
Ignition modules, 74 (black grommet) and 75 (green grommet) are year specific and will not interchange.
76 to 79 (blue grommet) are interchangeable.
Ignition modules: 1974 is 1974 ONLY / 1975 is 1975 ONLY.
Blue module introduced in 1976 was used well into the 1990's.

To help you learn your truck and in case you did not get a owners manual. Owners manual free download. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9Y...J_jpVdqy9XQf6A

And when you set the park/emergency DO NOT EXPECT TO SEE A RED BRAKE LIGHT ON THE DASH COME ON.

Now when you 1st start the truck, the light will/should 1st come as a proof test, but should go out after a few sec. It is comes on any other time you can have a leak in the brake system or a faulty brake pressure switch wiring issue.

Correct, so was 1974.

Assuming your pickup still has the original ignition all you need are points and a condenser. in a lot of ways I miss the simplicity and reliability of breaker ignition.

@R&S20 This is what I pulled out of the truck. It was mounted on the passenger side wheel well. The truck is a super camper special with 110,000 miles if that makes a difference.

That is a durashart box, not original on your pickup but that's fine. get one for a later 70's model it should fit, might require some modifications to the plugs who knows how they did the conversion.

Thanks for the info @440 sixpack

Any idea why someone would convert the points system to a Duraspark module? Is the Duraspark more or less reliable? Thanks again!

They were supposed to be more reliable, but they suck. Just search through this forum and you’ll find out. GM got it right with HEI. Ford screwed the pooch.

My opinion, get a new PerTronix distributor for $325 and you’ll be done without ever having to worry about it for a very long time. Two wires and you’re done. It will clean up your engine compartment too since you’ll be able to delete a lot of the rat’s nest of wiring that comes with the factory Ford ignition systems.

Go with a one wire alternator and you’ll be in even better shape.

Nothing is more reliable than points, but electronic ignition has it's advantages.

I like the durashart but the boxes can and will fail, just carry and extra and you're good. they're far better than any of the aftermarket imported crap as far as I'm concerned and they look original even in your older Ford.

And if you get to carry a spare IG module, make sure it is stored with the black stuff facing UP and NOTHING is on top of it. When it gets hot in the tool box or glove box that black stuff turns into a gooey mess.

Points work, they just require occasional replacement and gap settings.

My '77's original Motor Craft ignition box started acting up about 10 years ago one hot afternoon after work, about 5 minutes after starting it, but a still cold coke doused on it got me to home. POS only lasted about 35 years. My then spare (an off brand bought cheap at a trucking company's wreck salvage store) carried since the '80s had melted it's guts in the box it came in, but it worked when cold water wouldn't. Now I carry a gooder spare placed up side down in a box so that it's guts will stay inside.

I've had just as many GM ignition modules fail as Ford...at least with Ford you just unplug the old one and plug in the replacement without taking the distributor cap off (which is on the back of the engine)...which can be a pain in the middle of summer wheat harvest on the side of the road with a hot engine, etc... :-)

I guess that’s the problem with anecdotal evidence. I never had one fail, but that’s only my experience. Obviously your mileage may vary.

If you had the later model small cap HEI with the remote mounted coil it was never a problem to remove the cap, even with cowls that hung all the way over the distributor. If you had a large cap with the contained coil, well then yeah, that could be a pain.

The good thing is that if the OP goes with the PerTronix distributor, he gets the best of many worlds. More reliable system, compact design, ease of installation, eliminates a mess of wiring, and if you have to replace that module the distributor is on the correct side of the engine. Easy like Sunday morning.

OP: On the other hand, if you want to go back to points for some reason I have a perfectly working distributor out of a 73 250 that I would love to see going to a good home where it will actually be used. Original stuff off Papa’s old truck is keeping at least three trucks around here factory accurate and going strong. It’s yours if you want it free of charge.
