OK Guys,
Where can I get a replacement or have my starter rebuilt? Mine is a 226 6 cyl. engine, everything I find is for a V8, discrimination!
Thanks,
Rob
112 Tooth Flywheel Ring Gear pairs with a 10 tooth CCW starter drive B-11350
114 Tooth Flywheel Ring Gear meshes with a 9 tooth CCW starter drive 8HA-11350
You may not be able to simply rely on what is on the starter in the event that it was erroneously replaced with the more prevent 10 tooth starter drive. Unfortunately, many parts databases cross the 9 tooth part number with the 10 tooth drive. It is believed by many that while a 10 tooth will fit and seem to work with the 114 tooth ring gear, it leads to premature and excessive wear and could be a contributor to the issue you are chasing now.
Where are you located? In st lou we have a starter rebuilder...Broner 314-664-2101 I've used him several times for several things but not my 226...yet!
The advice above is correct. Here's another option of a new bendix that I prefer.
You can also take the starter apart and clean it. Be careful as you take it off the engine - the mounting bolts are holding the starter together. You will pull the case off the armature if you're not careful. Keep a couple of 5/16" nuts handy to put on the mounting bolts while it's out of the truck.
I've dealt with Mac's for the past 20+ years, but i haven't done much recently on flatheads. They were great to work with 10 years ago.
Mac's was acquired by Eckler's a few years ago and isn't the same. Then about a year ago, Eckler's was sold to Turn5 and unfortunately some product lines and staffing were dropped.
Aside from that, the starter you listed does not list tooth count, and being that it touts V8 all over the product page, I would wager it is a 10 tooth variant.
