rust hole in frame

hi, i live in ny, salt on roads in winter causes rust big time. on a recent crawl under inspection of my f-250 , i noticed a rust hole the size of a golfball and weak around the edges of the hole, the hole is centered in the frame behind the passenger side rear shock mount and forward of the gas tank,is this a common area for rust? is it possible to beef it up with steel by welding or bolting it in, or time to part out my 79 f-250,if i do weld or bolt something in what would the local inspection station think of it?

The textbook says don't weld truck frames... they are hardened steel and will be weaker at the weld areas. However, many have reported welding with no adverse effects. I would choose the plate option personally. If the truck isn't worked/loaded hard, I would arrest the corrosion by grinding out the hole, phosphate and paint it and go about my business, personally. The area between the leaf-spring mounts isn't stressed nearly like the center span (cab to bed area). BTW, the state inspects your frame in NY????
