When I drive off from a stand still (truck already in drive), I feel a thump as if there was a shift with somthing heavy, it seems to come from the engine area but not under very soft acceleration. My u-joints don't clunk when I put it into gear. Could it be my motor mounts, and if so, how do I diagnose it and if need be, how do I go about replacing them myself?? Thanks for the anticipated responses??
Try this just be careful! With the hood open so you can see the engine from the cab hold your foot on the brake put it in drive and slowly give it gas. As you load it if the mount is broken you will see the engine lift to the right(you can do this in reverse to check the other mount as well).
BTW if you have a friend that can watch for you its easier.
My truck did the same thing and I couldn't figure it out till I swapped the motor and found that the bolts were loose that held the motor mount brackets to the frame. The actual rubber mounts were fine. Check this out first as the bolts are pretty easy to change.
not too hard just jack the motor up from the oil pan after loosening the bolts and nuts from the motor and frame and slip the new ones in place and torque them down. that is all
The Wiz 427, I tried the test you suggested and the engine tilts in both directions with the truck in drive and reverse respectively. How much tilt is normal??
I would at least slip a piece of plywood on top the jack. The engine is going to torque some even if the mounts and bolts are good. If the mount is bad it'll lift up and clunk back down when you let off the gas.

Update, I had the rear springs replaced yesterday and my drive shaft balanced + new u-joints. As part of replacing the springs, one of the shackle bushings was replaced. So far, i don't feel the thump. Maybe it was the shackle bushing or the u-joint?? Whats do you all think?
