I'd get it in to the dealers ASAP to get it on record just in case something goes bad in the future. It sounds like the dreaded piston slap to me, I don't know if your definition of knock is the same as mine, but if it's just at start up, and sounds more like a lifter clacking, and goes away in 5-30 seconds you have what many of us have, and what the manufacturer says is no problem. Sucks huh ? Hey, it's only (your) money. But seriously I would, while you have some warranty left have your dealer duly notate that you have a suspicious noise at start-up.

I had that same exact piston slap problem on my 5.4 expedition the whole time I owned it, traded it in at 134kmi if it provides any stress release. I would still bring in to the dealer though, they will tell you to "**** off its normal" but at least you will have a paper trail if something goes wrong. Luckily my f-250 has made to 40kmi with no sign of knock or ping... yet.

Uh-huh, my next oil change is @90K miles, I bot my van @50K. Of course it was a warm summer day and I thought I did alot of research into the Ford V-10 (but I had the serious 'gotta have-its' for one) and found nothing anywhere regarding any problems so I didn't even hear of piston slap til weeks into my ownership. And of course I had no warranty.

I have found, for me at least, that Mobil 1 10W-30 pretty much quiets completely any start-up noise and I have read all the stories of lots of miles even with piston slap. So I don't concern myself with it. Heck even if I did would Ford concern itself for even half a second or admit to a design fault ? Ha, yea right.

So all in all I'm pretty stinkin happy to have 20 feet of vehicle that's as quick as it is. Sure the gas mileage sucks, but only relatively, if it had the old 7.5 liter under the short, stubby hood I would be getting maybe half of the 12-16 mpg I get now, but I knew what I was getting in to, so no surprises there.

Thanks for the replies.I`am off to the dealership to start a paper trail, can`t wait to hear what they have to say.I`ll let you all know. Ken on my next oil change I`am going to try mobile 1 to see if it helps. One of my friends owns a f450 v10 dump and he swares buy mobile 1,and he says he hasn`t had any problems like us. His truck is also a 2001 with 41,000 on it.

I just had a stunning realization... I use mobil 1 5w20 in my V10 (no slap) and my expedition I just used whatever sythetic blend was cheapest (always had slap at start up, more pronounced when it was colder out.) Admittedly it is a totally different engine but... still a ford modular.

I've gone to 10W-30 as opposed to 5W-20 to quiet the noise. Maybe I'm not protecting other internal parts as well as I could if I was using the lighter weight oil. But in 98 when my V-10 rolled out of whatever doors of whatever factory it was put together in, the recommended oil wasn't 5W-20, like the newer V-10's call for now. Ford did say the lighter weight oil was then retro-recommended for the earlier models like mine, but only the Mobil 1 10W-30 keep that noise down upon start up. So, if it was the recommended oil, and it does keep my pistons quiet, even if I may lose a quater of a mile per gallon, I'll live with it. I did get 14.8 mpg yesterday on a trip to Seattle with 1/2 of my kid's U-18 girls soccer team. I hit the cruise at 70 instead of 78, it did make a difference for me to turn less rpm.
