2000 Excusion 195000 miles on the V10. When you free rev or accelerate it has this hard to describe pooping/knocking/clunking noise. I'm assuming thrust washers but I have yet to find someone to operate the accelerator pedal while I listen to it. Its like a hollow sounding knock. You can also feel it with your feet on the floorboard. Its quiet at idle and sometimes while cruising. Before I bought it the guy tried to tell me it was an exhaust leak. No sir I repaired all the broken studs in the heads and the noise didn't change. I am pretty baffled by this one. The V10's sound funny to me anyway. I would greatly appreciate some help here. Thanks in advance
Definitely check the flex plate, but also, you can test the crank shaft end-play with the engine in the vehicle. Just pry the dampener away from the timing cover, and then back and see if it moves a lot - if I remember correctly, the spec says .005-.010"
A dial pointer micrometer is necessary to really check it, but with as much noise as you say, it'll be moving around quite a bit.
On the other hand, if it's moving that much, I think that's when the crank position sensor looses it's signal from the tone ring, so if it's not stalling when it does this, I'm not so sure that's the problem.
I remember a while back, emailing back and forth with one of our members who was having a heck of a time with his RV with the V10. Turned out, the flex plate was cracked at the bolt holes where it bolts to the crank. So definitely check that and the torque-converter to flexplate nuts.
