V10 knock

Hey guys its been a good long while since I posted on here. I been working like crazy and putting thousands of miles on my V10. Trouble free....put oil and gas in and go. Bought it at 159k in may. At 189k now and I loved it.

Now for the bad....its got this knock on startup and its like its coming from the left side of the engine. It is also using oil. I'm at the tail end of this oil change and need to do it again. I checked it cause I smelt it and heard engine knock @ 65. It was 3 qts low and that really scared me. I've. Got a question as to what it might be. I've heard of a cam follower issue but idk. And the manifold stud problem. This knock comes and goes now I'm thinking that its the follower its the issue because it went away after what I thought is the engine oil is reaching the follower and wiring it down... What do you guys think? Need some help as this is my daily drive vehicle.

Down 3 quarts. Get a compression test, that's a lot of oil, she may be done.

She had compression. 3 quarts over 5600 highway miles.

Could be rod bearings, or main bearing. What kind of oil are you using?

If you did the engine compression test and all cylinders came out OK , then may be all valves & springs are fine . Some members reported excessive oil consumption because of bad PCV valve and/or leaking hoses . I would change the PCV valve (motocraft brand only) and its hose (passenger side cover ) and the 90 degree elbow on throttle . I would also check the second PCV hose on the driver side cover to make sure hose is not disintegrated and tight fit on both ends .

Obviously , new PCV valve & hoses will not resolve your knocking problem . May be engine operated with low oil for too long . I would check the engine oil frequently and hope for the best .

Good luck,

It comes and goes. I was told about cam followers being a problem on the Triton motors. Its coming from the top end.
