My 2005 Ranger 4x4 4.0 has 50k on it. Owned since new. How hard is it to changed trans fluid? Is there a filter? I have a lift.Is there anything else to be aware of? What is a good gasket to use?

Not that difficult, just messy due to no drain in factory OE TransPan, so crack pan open & let it drip, have rags+absorbant handy.
Yes there is a Trans ATF Filter in the 5r55e; 4WDs have a deeper TransPan, so need Filter with longer BottomSuctionTube:
* MotorCraft# xL2z-7a098-da \ ft-134 or Wix# 58841 or equal
For TransPanGasket, use a hybrid Cork+Rubber version:
* MotorCraft# f5tz-7a191-a or FelPro# tos18679 or equal
Use MerconV compatible ATF, preference here is
* RedLine# HiTemp\30205 1gal or AmsOil# ssmv \ atf1g 1gal
While you're there, good time to retorq the Trans ValveBodyBolts & adjust the Bands.
Also consider servicing 4x4TransferCase ATF & Differentials GearOil.
Preference here for all these items is every 33kMiles\4Yrs.
Consider replacing TransPan with new one having a DrainBung & also install a FumotoDrainValve, same size Threads as Engin Drain.
ALso, be sure to inspect TransCooler loop Tubing+Hoses, this is notorious for ATF leaks.
Several good how-to vids on YT ; just google "5r55e ATF Filter Gasket Valve Body Bands".
A real full vehicle lift would be nice; I've only got 2 floor jacks.
