So I am planning on doing a trans service on my 04 nf250 5.4l. Should I use MOTORCRAFT filter or I am a fan or WIX? What gasket to use as some filters do not come with it and there are so many type now? And last use MERCON V? Thanks.
I have no preference on the brand of filter. Use the gasket that is already there. It is reusable and FAR better than the ones that come with the filter. And yes, MERCON V is the right fluid for the 4R100 trans in your truck.
Thank you for the info. This trans was rebuilt at 43k miles and believe the shop did a fluid change after diving it awhile. That was back in 2007. It now has 122k on it so think it needs filter and fluid change. Think when it was rebuilt they would have used the reusable gasket? The trans has never leaked a drop of fluid.
I just use Motorcraft filters and mercon V. The factory gasket can be reused if it wasnt ripped. I was skeptical at first because i remember a long time ago i was told we cant use Mercon v. But mnf we can. So there must of been some change in the chemical composition of the fluid to make it backward compatible. But my uncle said the mercon V is the right fluid now.
My 2003 Crown Vic uses the same fluid.
Should I get the Motorcraft Mercon V, another brand or synthetic? What is the difference between Mercon V, LV and SP. can I run them or not? Just wondering. Thanks

as far as I know the LV SP are for newer transmissions. I would get the Mercon V and a quality filter.
I use aftermarket fluids as far as engine and gear oil or brake fluids etc but for transmissions I only use factory recommended fluids. This way I know for sure there won’t be any “wrong fluid” issues
The Motorcraft will work fine. The have a synthetic blend also but that get spendy. If you like full synthetic, I run Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF in mine, can't go wrong with that. Any of those will (and likely other brands with the Mercon V specs) do.

If you tow or haul a lot with the truck I recommend synthetic MERCON V. Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF is MERCON V and my choice. If you don't use synthetic any fluid that says MERCON V on the label meets the spec and will work fine.

The difference is that MERCON V is what your trans needs and that MERCON LV and MERCON SP will destroy your trans in a surprisingly short time. LV and SP are low viscosity and your trans was not designed to use them. They will not provide enough lubrication.
I just read Mobil 1 is not certified by FORD for Mercon V. Is that true and will it be a problem? I am now thinking to just stick with Motorcraft Mercon V.
It looks like that is true. They used to have a MERCON V license, I don't know why that changed. Mobil's website claims that the fluid meets or exceeds the MERCON V spec: https://www.mobil.com/en/lubricants/...synthetic-atf/
