Hi all, thanks for looking at this thread. I’m new to the site and Need some help.
I have a 1996 F350 7.3 power stroke that I bought a few days ago. Im having issues with the transmission that won’t shift to second gear unless I let go of the gas pedal. Once second gear engages, the rest of the gears continue to shift fine. I’m not sure wether this trans has ever been rebuilt, the truck has 281000 miles. I have changed the diff abs speed sensor, and checked continuity on the wires from end to end and it checked out.
I’m getting the codes P0476 “exhaust pressure control valve malfunction” and P1705 “trans sensor out of self test range”
I took apart the MLPS as per the code, and checked the ohm reading on every gear, and it seems to all be in range. There’s also continuity between two pins which I don’t remember what number they are but according to the video I saw, those two need to have continuity when it’s in Neutral. So I cleaned it up real good, put it back on and I’m still getting the issue.
i have left to check the wires going to the Mlps but I assume they’re working fine since the truck has no issues starting up. I would really appreciate any help, this is my first diesel truck and I’m trying to learn how to work on it. Thanks!

That's a really, really bad assumption.
The circuits that the PCM monitors and uses to control the transmission have nothing to do with starting. That is a separate circuit in the MLPS. Now the code you got for the MLPS can set if you ran self test in any gear other than park.
Having said all of that, I believe your problem is a failing intermediate one way clutch.

I see, thanks for pointing that out! Im trying to check everything else before I have to take out the transmission. Previous owner mentioned that the solenoid shift pack needed to be replaced but I’m not sure how true that is. I’d have to take it out to test it for sure but on the live data it shows that it’s calling for second gear but it won’t let go of first, it’ll hold first gear calling for second until I release the gas pedal and then first gear would go to the “off” position allowing second to kick in.
I don’t feel the transmission slipping as far as I can tell. It’s surprisingly smooth past the 1-2 issue
I have also used the manual 1 and shifted it to manual 2 and it goes right in, no hesitation. I don’t know if that is something that helps in finding the problem
Mine did the same thing, ended up installing a reman trans from the parts store.
Mine started after a crazed WOT run then lost second gear. Is yours slipping when in second gear?
No slipping as far as I can tell. I do plan on eventually getting a better transmission or rebuilding the current one, how are you liking yours? I would like to get this old girl to 500 or so horsepower later down the road.

Can you explain what you mean? I don't understand this at all. How does a gear go to the "off" position? Do you mean the shift solenoid changes from on to off?

on the live data on the obd scanner, it shows the gears go to either “on” or “off” position depending on what gear it’s in. Once it calls for second gear, you can see on the live data that both first and second go to the “on” position, but it will not shift to second until I let go of the gas pedal, then once that happens, it shifts to second and first gear switches to “off”.

For my use and power level it has held up great. I'm not easy on the throttle, and towed some heavy stuff, check my sig pic, that was a 15k load driving mostly city, and some WOT runs on take off just for fun while towing that load.
But if you plan on going full blown bananas on power then you need a transmission that will hold the power and that's going to be an $$$ transmission.

yeah I hear you. I’ll probably be doing that much much later down the road. I wish mine could look as good as yours! I got so much stuff to do to it still…. I’m currently working on dropping the tanks and everything on the rear end so I can paint the frame but it’s not easy with this off and on rain after hurricane Idalia. I might actually take it down to a local mechanic and have them take a look at the trans, if it’s not good, I may just end up replacing it with something better, like what you got.
Could anyone help me find some E4od shift solenoid mounting bolts and the 20 pan bolts? I waited to long to put it back together and lost them..any help would be appreciated thank you.
