Fan Shrouds Compared

351m/400 shroud D7TA-AA (part # D7TA-8146-A) vs 302 shroud D3TA-CA (part # D3TZ-8146-B) look pretty close to same in important areas, both seem to have same bolt holes or slots, but the 351M/400 one has near a 20-1/2" fan opening, the 302 one has a 18-3/4" fan opening (DC says) .... but my new 7 blade Ford fan is only 17-1/2" so it'll fit in the 18-3/4" hole. Mount holes can be moved if needed.

The 351M/400 shroud is 28" wide and 22-3/4" tall. The 302 shroud is said to be 28-1/4" wide and 21-3/8" tall. I don't know how much is due to the 302 one having mount slots, and a 1-3/4" smaller fan hole diameter which alone would lower the top arch by 7/8". 22-3/4" minus 7/8" is 21-7/8"" & pretty near to 21-3/8" so that might account for the height difference. I don't know how "exact" published measurements are. I can adjust up vs down as long as it's close and wide enough.

My top radiator hose is 8" to the passenger side of the radiator measured from the cap center.

As best as I can tell, the 351M/400 fan looks-measures like the fan center is offset towards the passenger side by 1-1/2" (
so there is 3" more shroud on the driver side ... est 2" on the passenger side, 5" on the driver side, added to the fan opening on my D7TA-AA factory shroud ... adds up to 28") but online pics of the 302 shroud look like might be the same offset. The outer dimensions are pretty close too. The 302 shroud also is said to be a little deeper, which is OK, less that 1/2" difference from quoted depth to what my oem 351M/400 shroud is.

I've looked all over the net, doesn't look like any one of the usual suspects have the D7TA-AA 351M/400 shroud .....but Auto Krafters just up the road has the 302 shroud D3TA-CA in stock, (
but not the one for 351M/400s). Thinking might take my ruler for a drive tomorrow, certainly save shipping if it'll work. Looks to me like it will .... with some light massaging. .

Any experiences?

I don't know about the fan centering, or if a 302 shroud interchanges with a small fan M motor one, but the measurements are definitely not exact, it all seems to depend on how you hold your tape measure. The 1/4 in is definitely negligible.

Depends on a lot of things, a 302 takes a different radiator and hoses if it has AC. Several different cooling packages for all engines. You might look in the search sections for the charts Number Dummy has put in several times. I think he has been asked so many times he takes a hiatus. DC has a pretty good listing for shrouds. Maybe not available but might help.

Thank You.
I've got all the dimensions from mine, and I'll take them with me when I'm up there near Auto Krafters and pull the one out of a box and measure it there on the counter ... but it ain't happening today. My thinking is since a 351M/400 is really a tall deck 302/351W, likely only the fan diameter was much different. I may yet fix this one though, then it's a mute point. My radiator is good and my shroud is good on three sides. I have the arch top piece, but missing some other little pieces. That D3 one is right in most every way. I downloaded ND's chart, it helped.

This thread was because I thought someone else maybe had already made this substitute. It would be tight if tried with a stock 5 blade 351M/400 fan at 18+ inches ... but my fan is the 7 blade 17-1/2 inch one now though. Was intended for a bunch of Fords with 302s.

08-29-2023 update ..... A really good friend of ours lost his wife, and while the services are an hour plus north, they are just a few short miles from Auto Krafters ... so I'll go by and measure that D3TA-CA after services ... on the way back home ... before messing with any attempts to "fix" mine.

Just because I was asked, and because I now know there's a few different ones out there, I measured my new one today. I gotta say, it's shaping up to be a near perfect fit. Might end up trimming the relief for the top radiator hose, but good chance not. The lower hose relief is about perfect, as is the fan hole's offset to the passenger side. I was measuring the diameter in several directions, it varies a hair but for the most part is 19" I am using a 17-1/2" fan.

I have finished with the shroud. Because My mounting bolts had nuts on the fan side and I didn't want to widen my mount slots more, I made spacers for both sides out of 11/32" plywood to raise the mount surface up flush with those nuts. This let me move the shroud up a good 1/4" or so to gain a little room between the fan blades at the top, without cutting more out of the 4 slots. I also used some rubber conveyor belt material to make blocks to go under my washers, to firmly grip the shroud once adjusted. Lastly I used some flexible foam core split pipe insulation on the top and bottom of the shroud to sort of seal off air leakage. I know ... need to neaten it up. I put a reflective red sticker on top too. Now I have more room at top and the sides, such that I could even change a belt.

I may yet return to the AC later this Fall or in the Spring, I'll need hoses.
