I've got to be getting close but just testing the waters here. In recent threads my issues are improving and miss/cutting out are gone. Truck is 94 F150 with 5.8 and E4OD 4x4. Has 142,000 miles. Truck will act like it slipped into neutral for a split second and then jerk back into gear. Does it at all speeds. Speedometer and odometer work fine and as they should. I've read some forums and I'm running around in a circle. When I think it's one problem then I see another possible issue. I may be full of **** but seems like if you turn the truck off and turn it back on it might come out of whatever it's doing. It does shift rough and the engine surges at times but it comes and goes. When I'm talking surges I mean I can have my pedal in one position and it'll sometimes bog down (kind of like a manual) and then come back from a stop. No pattern seems to be apparent. I have ran KOEO and KOER test at different times of day with the truck warmed up and with the truck cold and no trouble codes. Had a friend think my PSOM is bad but not completely convinced. If the PSOM is bad and I can confirm this I will send it out to be rebuilt. I seen one thread that said it could be a bad MLPS but that doesn't explain the surging. I seen another that said it could be a bad VSS and another about a toner ring. Any ideas would be great! I just need put on the right path.
Just got the MLPS from RockAuto finally. I've worked on engines for years but haven't ever replaced or repaired anything on a transmission. Correct me if I'm wrong but the truck needs to be in neutral (not park) to do this correctly...right? Also I should put dialectic grease in the plug, right? Is there anything I should check out while I'm around that area? I figured I'll pull all the electrical plugs (if I can get to them) and make sure nothing is melted on the plug or corroded on the tranny. Going to have a field day with it tomorrow so if anyone can answer my questions by then that'd be great. Once I have buttoned up everything I plan on taking it on a forty or so minute round trip to test it out. I will then come back with results.
New neutral safety switch is installed and I feel improvement. After three hours of blood, sweat and tears because of the damn thing being a pain it was for the most part a clean install. Took it for a drive and didn't have a jerky shift or random transmission loss once. Drove for about 15 to 20 minutes. I'm not going to guarantee anything is fixed until I get more miles down but I do think that fixed the issue. This does make sense why the old one might of been malfunctioning. Twice this summer I was caught in severe storms and ran through flooded road ways. I had water all the way up to my floor boards. The sensor looked icky as hell and had some moisture in the plug. Safe bet when I went through the flooded road ways I submerged the sensor for more than two to three seconds. I can't thank you enough for your help Mark and appreciate you taking time to help. This whole thing has been a huge mess as this has been going on for almost two months and very expensive repairs. If anyone else who sees this from other threads I greatly appreciate your help on trying to help and putting me on the right path. I will drive the truck more and get back to this thread after I put about 100 or so miles on it.
Truck seems to be doing good and I think the problem is gone. Seems to shift pretty good and haven't had any transmission loss. Only thing I notice is that sometimes it comes out of 1st a little late and goes into 2nd hard sometimes. It's not horrible and only does it sometimes. As stated no warning lights of any kind and no codes. Speedometer works just fine. Transmission doesn't slip at all. Possibly just a Ford thing? I'm not too concerned as long as the transmission doesn't disengage. Besides for that everything else has felt great.
Ok maybe it was a fluke but it just did something kind of weird. Seen something online that said they had this issue but it was fine when you started in the 2nd gear position. Figured I'll try it just for the hell of it. Pulled up on a stop sign and put it back into D and nothing. Put it in 2nd and take off. I then stop and put it in neutral and then into D and worked fine then. Kind of weird but could it just be a fluke or something to be concerned about?
I've put around 200 miles on the truck and no disengaging transmission. Seems to be working as it should. My shifting still seems off and likes to jerk into 2nd time to time but that's another issue for another day. At least now it's manageable to drive. I can deal with a few rough shifts. Another thanks to everyone who took the time and put me on the right path in multiple threads about this issue.
