I guess my point is that the vows seem to have become somekind of meaningless verbage that is just part of a ritual.
To some people yes. I believe there are still many people out there that take these vows seriously, but yes to some that do not.
(Matthew 19:29) "Everyone that has forsaken houses....or wife or children for my name's sake shall receive a hundredfull and shall inherit eternal life."
I'm in a generous mood tonight, no need to send the $1000. Mail it instead to a battered woman's shelter. You're still ninety percent ahead.

I don't believe this verse supports your claim...
here is the same verse in the Message version:
"And not only you, but anyone who sacrifices home, family, fields--whatever-because of me will get it all back a hundred times over, not to mention the considerable bonus of eternal life. "
see I think what Christ is saying is if you leave behind pysical possessions...your family...your friends...your job...etc...
Just because He list a physical possession with family following doesn't mean that He insinuates that family is property. No wonder you get some different things out of some of the verses you read.... Let me ask you this if it says....you lead your cattle, sheep, etc does it automatically mean that a sheep is also a cow?
Home in these times was their community...their main place....its where they worked, lived, grew...etc...it was thier roots if you will...He simply states if you give that up (ie: leaving your roots and follow Him, then you will be rewarded.)
thats one of the things about scriptures, different people read them differently
figure in all the different versions the bible is available in
I'm confused
The question was should divorce be "allowed", not "should people divorce?".
We live in an imperfect world. Suppose a husband commits adultery, beats his wife, is a drunk, neglects his children, can't hold a job, etc. And suppose he wasn't like this 25 years ago when he married his wife. She doesn't HAVE to divorce him, and there are situations where wives have stuck it out and turned the worthless fart around, but....I am NOT going to tell her she HAS to stay married to such a man.
From a Bible standpoint God "allows" divorce only because we humans are pretty good at screwing things up.
I look at it this way, what if the poll had asked;
Should one man be allowed to shoot another man in the head with a shotgun?
I'd answer YES. What if the man was about to kill an innocent child? Another man should be "allowed" to stop him from doing so - by whatever means are necessary.
Now, do I think divorce is far too prevelant and far to easy???
I vote yes. My Mother was married to an abusive cheating drunk for 21 years trying to "work it out" because the pastor of our church told her "whatever you do don't divorce. you must keep the family together." putting all responsibility for our happiness on her shoulders. Now if anything went wrong with the marriage it was her fault! When she finally came to her senses and left him, Not one of her long time friends from the church was there to support her.

Like in the other thread, church is a joke. It is good your mother got out of that marriage.
Divorce doesn't bother me, if 2 people grow apart and don't love eachother, I have no problem with them ending the marriage.
Well THAT church might have been a "joke" but your generalization could fuel a whole new thread. It's definately not a funny joke.
It's also good that you mother got out of that church, I hope she found a real one.
