non starting issue
My 1970 has been sitting for a few years and is giving me a struggle to start. I know the gas is bad, but it appears that no fuel is getting into the motor. It is a 1968 Mustang 289 with a Edlebrock Performer 289 intake, Edlebrock 1405 600cfm 4 barrel, oversize cam (not sure of the specs) and hedman headers. I replaced the fuel pump and to make sure I am getting good fuel, I put the pump inlet hose into a full gas can with fresh gas so I am not using the old gas in the tank. The motor will run if I pour gas down the carb, but nothing after that. Wondering two things. One, could the carb be so varnished up that it is not getting fuel into the chambers? And two, is a 600fcm carb too large for this motor? When it did run, it seemed to be over carbed.
Thank you in advance for your input,
-John
Check fuel lines, filter and pickup in the tank. Check fuel pump.
Check your ignition--does it still have points? Hit them with a file if they are otherwise sound. Make sure you have good spark.
The 600 CFM carb should work on that engine setup. You don't really need the full 600 CFM but having a little more carb lets you get all your going to get out of it at higher RPM.
BUT it needs to be jetted correctly and adjusted so the choke works right, the accelerator pump gives you enough but not too much and the secondaries come in properly, etc.
Given the cost of a different carb, I would work on this one.
I replaced the fuel pump, dropped the tank to empty bad gas and flush, and I had the carb rebuilt. The battery is shot, so I had to jump it to start. It started and seemed to run good. Shut it off, then started it up again and drove it out of the barn. Next day I had to jump it again to start, ran good and drove it down the street and back. I let is sit and idle for a few minutes then it stalled. Could not get it to start again. Waited sond time and it finally started again. Pulled it into the barn and let it idle again. After a few minutes it stalled again. I dont see much fuel in the clear fuel filter!! Confused...
Take the fuel tank out of the equation and try and run it off a "pony tank". A little gas 2.5 or 5 gal can hanging on the fender. If you have no problems that way, then you know the issue is fuel delivery. Tank, lines, sending unit pick up tube filter sock. Does it have duel tanks?
When you dropped the tank, did you replace the sending unit? Is the pick up tube end "filter sock" clean?
