Probably a dumb question, but I'm wondering if any company makes a wireless infrared temp gauge? Specifically, a two-piece product that would have an infrared sensor that could be mounted in the engine bay and aimed at the block (or any other item one wanted to measure the temp of), and a temp gauge in the cab that receives a wireless signal from the infrared sensor....I've looked around online a bit, and searched the forums, but I couldn't find anything like this...
The idea came to me while I was using an infrared temp gun to read the temp of the block, and I thought "it sure would be cool if I could just permanently mount an infrared sensor aimed at the block, and have it send the temp wirelessly to a gauge in the cab"
If anyone knows whether such a product exists (or the reasons it doesn't exist), I'd be interested to learn...
Why would you want to read that area all the time?
What is it reading that you need to know that coolant temp will not work?
Now something you can try is fix the gun to measure what you want on the motor and then take your phone to "tape" the gun.
Or use a GO Pro to "tape" the gun its a tool you can add to the tool box
Although I use an infrared, as do many, I suspect a fixed sensor is more accurate unless you just want to read surface temperature. The IR guns are subject to a lot of interference and variation when reading temperature and won't tell you exactly what your coolant temp is, as they take their reading from the surface. This is evidenced by the variation in readings that you get depending upon the distance, angle and aiming point of any particular surface that you are reading.
