12V starter? Axle/spring adaptability?

1) How can you tell a 12V starter versus a 6V starter, with regards to 223ci engines? I grabbed a few starters a few years ago and never looked at them closely. I might be needing one soon.

2) Are front axle assemblies and front/rear leaf spring packs the same for all 53-56 F100?

Using a 6 v starter in a 12 system is fine for limited usage. Meaning no long cranks. 12v in a 6v system isn't going to work.

53-54 rear springs are the same, but not the same as 55-56
front upper and lower shock brackets are different on the 56
front springs I've seen 5 leaf's up to 8 leafs. I'm really not sure what made the difference

Generally, 12V starters will have 3 field coils, 6V will have two.

I find 6V starters to be of heavier duty (they need to be for the current involved - roughly twice as much as 12V) and they work just fine on 12V. Regardless of voltage, excessively long cranks are not good for starters.

According to the parts catalog, there was 3 different front spring sets available for the 53-56 F100/250 trucks that will interchange. An 8 leaf pack was standard on the F100. A 7 leaf pack was standard on F250 and shown as optional heavy duty for F100. And a third, 7 leaf front spring was available for F250 heavy duty.

If Kevin says he's seen something different, I would submit, based solely on the information available and shared here, that they may have been modified by someone other than Fomoco.

Help me out here on starters. I hate to appear dumber then I am, but 12V starters are - ground and 6v starters are + ground so if you connect a 6v starter to 12V - ground wiring system does the starter turn backwards? Too many beers tonight fogs me my brain.

You are thinking of permanent magnet motors. The starter motors of our trucks use electromagnetic field coils and so the direction is determined by the internal wiring and the net result is the direction of rotation is polarity insensitive.
