I was talking with a good friend of mine, gearhead/old school hot rod builder. He was actually the guy who found this for me and helped me pick it up today.
He suggested that because the way it was running (hard miss at idle that smooths out with RPM, backed up by CCT) that it's acting more like a bent connecting rod than a flat cam.
Also, very little smoke, not sure if I mentioned that before.
The work order show new oil and filter about 1500 miles ago, and not misfires at that time. Next work order is 200 miles ago after sitting all winter, thats when the misfire and low compression showed up.

He theorized (over the phone) that if it went from running good to misfire and CEL due to a flat cam / failed follower, there would likely be evidence in the filter.

Just pulled the filter, looks pretty good to me.

Still doing leakdown tomorrow.

Can a rod rod be changed in-situ? From underneath? Or does the head need to come off? I'd suspect theres no compressing the rings from below. Still speculation.....

Might as well run a double dose of archoil in block and fuel and if symptoms improve then just a straight up injector issue.

Whether or not there's an injector issue (I don't believe there is) there is definitely a compression issue.
I cranked it without fuel and I can hear a weak cylinder.

Sitting, one of the valves may have hung up, the lifter extended, and the valve took a hit. The VT365/PS6.0L have a bad habit of doing that.

The '05 has a manual, which is even better for me, but I don't do Canada. Thaks for posting it, though.

Have a bad habit of doing that even when properly maintained or mainly on engines not taken care of/running crazy hp tunes?

My '04 6.0 is blowing white smoke. Parked since. I'm in the market for an OBD II scanner and would like to know what to look for. Had head gasket, studs replaced and EGR delete about 100k ago.

Specifically for Ford Forscan and Forscan lite are probably your best bet.
If you want to do other brands Autel has a broad range of scantools depending on what you want to do. Theres another brand that's become popular lately but I don't recall the brand.

If the leakdown shows loss thru the intake or exhaust I'll be pulling the valve cover. I'm going see if my boroscope will fit in the glow plug hole, bit I suspect its too big.

Fender liner out

Glow plug was covered in oil below the threads... is that normal?

My Diesel compression tester didn't have an adapter for the 6.0, but a 14mm fitting from my gas compression tester worked fine.
I cranked it up to 90 psi and listened, I had noise coming from the intake, exhaust and crankcase. That seems pretty inconclusive.
I cranked the engine over with the starter several times and the leakdown gauge never got above 10% static, it jumped a little while cranking but I never saw 20% while cranking.
In retrospect maybe if I had put balloons over the respective outlets I may have been able to identify more or less pressure.

I got this grand idea to hook up a smoke machine into the glow plug hole and see what happens.

Depending upon the crank position I got smoke from either the intake or exhaust, or nowhere.

I was just using the starter to turn the motor over, so it was very imprecise. I never referenced TDC or which stroke the cylinder I was messing with was on.
I was mainly looking to see if I could get smoke from the intake or exhaust at different times, and if I could get any out of the crankcase.

Interestingly, the engine fired about 5 times, seemingly at random. After those firing events, I would see a very slight amount of smoke come from the filler neck.
I'm going to attribute that to combustion, and not my smoke machine. Aside from those few occurrences, I never saw any smoke from the crankcase.

At this point I'm assuming the head is going to need to come off, so this rig will be sidelined until I have time to deal with it. I'm confident at this point that I could part it out for enough to cover the purchase price, supply me with the spare drivetrain and suspension I wanted, and also have a complete semi-running 6.0 for parts on other rigs. Not bad.

I like this picture....
