A friend stumbled across an 07 Lariat F250 6.0 AT ECLB 4x4 at an estate sale. 177k.
Owners had done almost $5000 worth of work chasing a smoke issue and were then told it needed a new engine for $15k. ****ty shop IMHO, and I owned a shop.
Went and checked it out, has a miss on #1 and some white smoke cold, clears up warm at idle but still smokes under load.
Previous shop said they did a comp test and it had low compression, but there is NO blowby at filler neck. I think it's an injector issue.
Buzz test passes and contribution test shows #1 misfire that lessens with temp and rpm.
I bought it, gonna pick it up tomorrow. Plan on doing my own comp test on #1 and if that check out throwing some archoil in it, if it doesn't clear up swap #1 and #2 injector and see if anything happens or if I see anything obvious.
If nothing else it's a good donor drivetrain for an upcoming E350 4x4 build and a few parts for my 2005 F250 KR salvage build. Then sell parts until I recover my investment.
Well, it does in fact have low compression on #1. I forgot about the starter wire trick to check compression, it failed this morning.
Got it home and in the shop, I'm going to drop the wheel well liner tomorrow and do a leakdown test. Since it has virtually no blow by I'm thinking it probably has a bad lifter/cam.
I don't think this truck is worth enough to justify an overhaul, so if the cam is trashed I will just use it as a parts rig. Oh well.
On the up side, a recent (1500 miles ago) repair work order shows a reman #1 injector, oil cooler, Bulletproofed EGR cooler, standpipes/dummyplugs/STC connector, coolant resirvior, coolant filter and a bunch more maintenance totaling about $5000. And it's got 3/4 tank of fuel! And good tires!

I have never lived in areas that salted the roads, and learned early on to avoid rusty bodies as I'm not a body guy.
If I just really wanted a Diesel Superduty for myself it would be worth rebuilding.
BUT, it's a Extended Cab Long Bed (not my favorite, or the most desirable) with moderate surface rust on the frame and drivetrain, And I happen to own a great 2000 7.3 CCLB 4x4, a pretty decent 2005 CCSB 4x4 6.0, and another moderately rusty frame CCLB 4x4 6.0.
So I was hoping for an easy fix and to make a few bucks. I'd likely be into this another $3000 (basically doubling my investment) and alot of my time to get everything where I want it just to sell it for maybe $8500.
On the other hand, I can use the Front and rear axles, front suspension, transfer case and wheels on a E350 van 4x4 conversion, then still be left with a 177k mile chassis and clean body for parts to fix and flip future vehicles. In addition to the above mentioned new-ish parts for my CCSB and 6.0 E350.
Heads, rocker carriers, intake manifold, front cover, etc, etc, are probably all in good shape also!
I wasn't aware of the wiring harness value/rarity.
I have an '05 thats leaking diesel into the coolant, I believe it's a head issue. I still need to tear down the drivers side and try to find it, but if I can't these heads would fix it then I can sell it.
