If you want to spend money, there's value in buying a robust Wifi or Bluetooth OBDII connector - the device that establishes the wireless connection to your phone (BT=Android; WF=Apple). I don't know which to recommend, but I know some are Chinese junk, and some are just older versions - the network technology has upgraded. Also, there are different network protocols to recognize and accommodate. For example, I have a different phone app for my Toyota Prii and it won't connect, even though my Bluetooth connector is on the approved list.
With a good quality wireless connector, you can use many apps and the future versions and new apps. With the high-dollar stand-alone products you are stuck paying for their future releases.
