Some of the hard covers have locks on the back of them that will not allow the tailgate to open is probably your best option. Of course anything can be compromised by a pro thief. I use Backflip on my Daily truck and it has a good tailgate lock but I don't know if they sell anything OBS for us.
Yea both are something I want to look into. Unfortunately it's a small price to pay rather than having someone steal the tailgate. I realized that although I have a ext cab it does make it difficult to go get groceries or other odds and ends and not be able to at least store them temporarily.
I looked into a tail gate lock a few years ago and found this. I haven't tried it yet but it looks pretty slick. ahttps://www.newlevelmotorsports.com/pl2300.html?cmp=bingshopping&kw=pl2300
THANKS these are two great suggestions. My vehicle, as far as I am aware doesn't have the automatic locks so I might opt to get the physical key required model.

I have thought about getting that one as well. Looks decent.
Currently I have the lock on the tail gate hinge / pivot.
I have seen this also but I actually asked Pop & Lock directly in a portal message on the website if they had a lock designed for the 1990 Ford Rangers and they straight up said no. They seem to offer 1993 thru 1996 only...So, I dont understand why we see these products with the 1988-1996 year ranges...
