Vin Decode
I'm a teacher at a technical school in Mass and we had a Ford with a wrecker body donated to the school. We have painted it a beautiful blue visible in the pictures. We are trying to decode the VIN to figure out what it started life as. I have attached a picture of the VIN plate on the drivers door.
Thank you for all your help.
N60 = LN600 gas
D = 330 2V HD FT gas V8
V = Kentucky Truck Plant
U07185 = 1974 numerical series, March 1974 production.
166 = 166 inch wheelbase
J = Rangoon Red (I can see it peeking out from behind the plate on the left)
N605 = LN600 gas, 19,200 lbs GVWR
DB8
DB = Black vinyl
8 = Custom Cab without butterfly hood
A = New Process model 435 four speed transmission
62J
62 = Rockwell (Timken) model F-106 single speed rear axle, 15,000 lbs capacity, 6.20 ratio
J = Ford 5,000 lb capacity front axle with power steering
19200 = 19,200 lbs GVWR
115222
11 = Boston District Sales Office
5222 = Special Order Number.
The usual special order items are all on the plate, so it may have been ordered with this specific combination or something else.
The wrecker body and equipment is not Ford but rather a third party that may have bought the truck specifically to make a wrecker out of it. This was a Cab & chassis when it rolled out of the factory.
The 4 speed transmission and single speed axle combo is not great, but probably worked fine for wrecker duty.
