Hi this is my first post here. I'm wondering how to get more power for my truck. About the truck...
1997 f150 4x4 Lariet extended cab. 3 door.
5.4 2v.... 200k miles. Very well maintained.
it has a tuner, K&N cold air intake, Air Ride overload air bags., plus many new parts. Overall, a nice, healthy truck.
I actually need a bigger truck, but that cost more.
Can I get enough power out of this truck ?
Over time, I bought a bigger trailer, and things to haul on it. My trailer is a 18 ft. tamden axle dovetail with attached ramps. It's heavy. I put 2 or 3 4-wheelers on it and it seems to be about all my truck can handle. Here's my question. When this engine finally wears out, can I upgrade to a bigger, stronger egine ? Or do I get a bigger, stronger truck ? Money is the problem. I can't afford a truck that cost as much as a house. On the used truck market, all I find is overpriced diesels, or worn out old ones that are overpriced as well. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.
These 10G trucks weren’t towing machines, really. They struggle on the higher end of their issued ratings and don’t have the goodies the newer trucks do (boxed frames, ITBCs, etc)
18ft trailer with quads is well within capacity of a 10g truck…but it’s also 20 years old.
What are you really trying to accomplish? You shouldn’t have any problems going 55-65 with it…sure it’s going to take longer to get up to speed…but that matters how much? It’s not going to be a race car for sure. Lock out top gear and let it rip.
You could consider a lighter aluminum trailer if you have a heavy steel one.
if you’ve got oversized tires, loose them or regear it.
I live in the Ozarks. Lots of hills and curves. And my trailer is a heavy steel trailer. I'm making do ok. I was just wondering about later on. When this truck is done. The prices on everything is so high. I'm retired, on limited income. But I'm trying to enjoy life as much as possible. If I could afford better stuff. I wouldn't be wondering about it. ! The blue truck belongs to a friend.
Thanks for all your thoughts and replies.

If you’ve got good brakes on your truck, and a proper brake controller on your trailer, enjoy the freedom of not having huge truck payments dude!
if your trailer doesn’t have brakes, kits do exist for them.
maybe you could consider a rear sway bar for your truck…that will really help on the turns.
