About a month ago my truck started losing acceleration time. I thought it was do to the cold. But now my truck will only do like 70mph and it's tapped out. It has great low-end power, so I'm thinking maybe my dist. needs to be advanced or maybe the fuel filter is a little plugged and my air filter is also like 10 yrs. old. It really points to the advance on the dist. but I don't know how it would have got behind. Unless my ignition or coil is just starting not to put out the spark it use to?
You might want to check out the exhaust system. if it burns oil atall you might have a plugged exhaust. I ran into that same problem with an 86 I had only it was a 302. I swapped engines and the thing still ran like crap, until I unbolted the exhaust and then oh man it ran awesome. now again it was really running bad though. does it miss at high rpm or just dog out? you might also take your ignition module off and have it tested at a local parts store. those are notorious for crapping out. good luck
I have a pure striaght pipe, so no prob. there and my truck doesn't take any oil. It's hard to explain what it does at 70, all I can say is it just acts like that's all it's got, it doesn't miss and doesn't suddenly dog out, just like I'm only pushin the throttle 3/4 down.
How much for a new ignition mod. it's around 40 something for an performance MSD in Jegs.
around 25 for a stock replacement I believe. now that also has the fuel injection right? you also have to wonder about the fuel pressure regulator, throttle position sensor. at an idle how does it react if you punch it? thats one reason why I havnt ever liked fuel injection to many variables. but you might get a manual and do some ohm checks on your sensors also. sorry I might not be much help with this.
No it's still carbed, but I made a drastic dicovery today, I was driving and I heard this clicking under my dash. At the same time my truck dogged out. I found this plug in when I got home that has a breaker in it. Can anybody tell me what this does? When I put a screwdriver in between the telegraph looking thing the truck runs better w/out the cutting out, but it's somwhat retarded. It's some sort of advance thing, but is it clicking b/c of the coil, dist. condenser, or that little box plug in under my dash?
Man I dont know, the only thing that I can think of is some sort of relay that might need to be replaced. one idea thats really off the wall, does your truck have any automatic temperature control for the cab? could it possibly be a temp relay causing your A/C compressor to kick on and bog you down? other than that off the wall explanation I have absolutely no idea. might try to take the part into a dealership and see if they can tell you what it is and go from there.
No A/C to bog down, it's got pretty bad now. I can barely drive the thing. I've search O'rielly's, Advance Auto and the only one who offers some sort of relay is Autozone. This is the only thing closs to the description.

yep thats the only thing i could come up with also. I changed one of those out on my 86 when trying to figure out what was wrong, never figured it out after $200 finally ditched the engine and put in a carbed one. kind of a bummer. You have a reall good problem here.
That real good prob. has to be fixed by 11 tomorrow morning or else I got another prob. Plus it's gonna be Sat. night and I like my truck, but the truck and I have more fun when we are out and about. Got a big party to go to.
argh well there hasnt been any vehicle that has kept me from a party. I always find a way. um does you truck have an over drive? im not familiar with the 4x4. also is your 4x4 manual engage or electronic? could it be your diffs fighting eachother? im really grasping at straws hear. im in an area that i know nothing about now hahaha
It's a 4spd man. with a fully mechanical 4x4 system, shifter on the floor, lock-outs, etc. Anyway I know that's not the prob. Well it feels like the fuel filter is plugged up when it dogs out, but I know it's ignition related. I went and bought another one of these boxes at Carquest and it clicked to, the auto parts stores had a hell of a time finding it for me, nobody seems to have heard of these, must a been a one year thing. The actual computer box on this truck is right on and under and part of the dist. Anyway I took off the dist. cap and cleaned the rotor and each of the dist. contacts and simply put it back together and now it doesn't run at all and this isn't the 1st time I've done this, so I did it right. I didn't unplug anything else. So today I stuck a spark plug in the coil wire and touched the spark plug on the frame, nothing. So I figured the coil must have went bad, so I took it off, now is there any other way to test the coil before I buy another one? I've heard they are known to go bad.

P.S Got to the party by the power of my friend's 2000 Power Stroke Diesel, had a hell of a good time, even though it was about 30 degrees out and sleeting.
I dont know of anyway to check a coil. the ignition module that is in the side of the dist. does come off. there is a screw that holds it on and then you pull it down towards the engine and it unplugs from the dist.
The thing I'm lookin at has a little regtangle cover and inside is a circut board covered with gel. There doesn't seem anyway to get this out, it also looks alright, nothing fried or anything.
ya thats the piece im talking about. it does come off though. Im not sure but I think there are 3 screws. 2 on the inside and one on the outside. and it slides down off of the dist. its been awhile since ive changed one. I didnt hink you could remove it either until I took the dist out and looked at it for a long time.
Think it would be worth it to buy one of those HEI dist. that have everything in them (coil, dist. condenser, advance system) and all you need to do is connect it to a 12 volt power source.
