Haven’t come across something like that here in TX. Owning a diesel should be common sense, but you do hear about those stories. I for fact know I would never put gas in my diesel. I always stress that to the wife lol
GREEN is NOT always Diesel, I have traveled through many states from Montana down to Utah, then straight across to CO, NM, Tx, OK, AR, MS, GA, AL, FL, NC
did not make notes, but I found Diesel with several other colors on the pump and the handle, the wierdest one of BLUE ???
I agree that it seems awful coincidental to start directly after fueling. I would start by draining the fuel bowl to see if anything abnormal shows. And even consider a test of feeding the fuel pump from a known good jug of diesel.
It could also just be related to shutdown/startup. I dropped a glow plug on an old OBS years ago during startup. A piece of it was stuck in the top of a piston. It hammered like a rod knock but sounded sharper than what you have.
How about ICP?
Fuel pressure?
Not sure what else it could be but let’s try to keep logical about what could reasonably happen just by sitting overnight.
I know the “it’s not gas” thought is strong but you also made a point to mention filling up right before shutting down in your original post. Maybe there’s a reason for that. It does seem most logical even if it can’t be explained right now.

yeah you make good points, also appreciate the help with the link!
she is currently at the shop, they are thinking flywheel is broken or stater inside the torque converter. Which I just had my transmission rebuilt just under 2months ago 🫠 by an only transmission shop.
Like I mention earlier, I don’t abuse my truck one bit and drive it like a normal vehicle. But power is there if needed, just doesn’t add up if that’s one of the issues causing this.

In my experience, blue has been the DEF dispenser.
The sound reminds me of a gas engine that blew a spark plug. I'm wondering if a glow plug, completely coincidentally may have blown it's core, or came loose and popped up out of it's hole. If that's the case, you could feel which side of the engine it's coming from just by laying your hand on the valve cover.
Or it could be a broken injector tip shooting too much diesel at each injection event. Heard that sound before on an old mechanical diesel VW I used to own. Hard metallic knocking noise just from a sticking injector over injecting that sounded like a hammer on the block.

That’s what I mentioned to the shop when I dropped it off today. I was thinking loose injector, they think it may be a broken flywheel or stater inside the torque converter. Will see that they come up with tomorrow.
YOU NEED TO PULL THAT HOOD INSULATION OFF,
RIGHT NOW !!!!!
I see it blowing around, exactly like it was on my Excurstion, the loose fibreglass floats around, and the Alternator sucks it inside.... then the Alternator burns up from Overheating..... cost me a very Expensive Leece Neville alternator, much bigger than the new one I had to buy to replace it, just a few months ago.

If an injector was that loose, it would bleed HPOP and diesel fuel oil so badly it wouldn't run. It's a glow plug if that is what is making the noise.

The flexplate cracking is a common problem for these trucks so maybe they’re onto something.
I’m not convinced the sound is correct for that though.
I don’t get the TC stator idea. Seems that noise should be kind of buried in the TC if that were the case. Did it drive ok?
Wish you could have drained the fuel bowl into a container before taking to a shop. Might have saved a diagnostic fee if something showed up there but oh well.
