EGR symptoms

My 83 f150 with a 351w has been sucking coolant and overheating when I get it up at higher rpm’s. The coolant overflow tank is empty after it overheats. I tested for engine block leak tester or blow head gasket tester and was negative. Also I don’t notice any visible coolant leaks below the truck. Been reading that the EGR valve or cooler might be a culprit. Or water pump? I’m just throwing out ideas.

EGR would only cause stalling and a rough idle. Will not cause overheating and coolant usage. When it overheats, is your upper radiator hose too hot to touch or just warm?

That is why I was asking about the upper hose. If the thermostat was opening, that upper hose would be very hot, too hot to hold on to. If it wasn't opening properly, then the water would not be flowing from the thermostat to the radiator, and the hose would not be as hot. You could also take the radiator cap off and when the thermostat opens, you can see the water flowing by from the upper radiator hose through the radiator.

Have you been doing some work to this engine lately? If all the air is not burped out of the engine, it will present the symptoms you describe. The engine will be full of air, the radiator full of coolant. The engine gets hotter and hotter, the thermostat works with hot water, not hot air. The air in the engine starts pushing the water out of the radiator, overflowing everything. Then the thermostat finally opens, and then all the coolant that is left is sucked into the engine. Usually after that you can add more coolant and either be ok after that, or if there is still some air in the engine, you may have another puking episode till all the air is worked out of the engine.

What is "higher RPM" and for how long?
5K+ for 30 min. is pretty high and long with out other cooling system work done to keep it cool.

Oh man I forgot and this one is for DaveF, what is the temp you call over heating we need numbers!

If you dont run it at high RPM dose it over heat?
Dose the lower radiator hose have a spring in it?
Still running a motor driven cooling fan?
If so is it mounted on the right way to pull air and not push it?

OP, I think you know what Dave F means when he says take the radiator cap off. Don't do that when the coolant is hot. Let the engine cool off, remove cap, add coolant to bring it up close to full. With cap off, start engine, run till the T'stat opens and you see flow. Let it cool and add coolant as needed.

Also, as Dave G mentioned, make sure the spring is in the bottom hose.
